Baldwin Wallace Baseball Team Drops Thriller in 11th Inning Against Haverford (Pa.) College

BEREA, OHIO --   The Baldwin Wallace University baseball team lost a heartbreaker today (Tuesday, March 11, 2008) to Haverford (Pa.) College, 12-11 in 11 innings, at the Gene Cusic Classic in Fort Myers, Florida. 

With its loss, BW is now 3-1 overall and has six games remaining on its Florida schedule. Haverford improved to 3-1-1 overall.

Haverford jumped out to a commanding, 8-0 lead with four runs in the bottom of the second inning, another in each of the third and fourth frames and two more in the fifth. The Yellow Jackets then scored once in the top of the sixth and four more in the seventh to close to within 8-5. Following a Haverford tally in the bottom of the seventh to make it 9-5, the teams traded runs in the eighth. The Yellow Jackets then tied the score at 10-10 with a four-run top of the ninth inning to send the game into extra innings.

After the teams traded scores in the 10th inning, Haverford broke the stalemate with a walk-off, run-scoring single in the 11th.

At the plate, BW pounded out 10 base hits and was led by junior catcher Matt Bolte (Jupiter, Fla./ William T. Dwyer) with three safeties, including a double and two runs batted-in, and senior right fielder Kevin Shenker (Twinsburg) had a pair of hits. Senior outfielder Shaun Slater (Wooster/ Norwayne), junior centerfielder Cody Kidd (Wellington), junior first baseman Riley Kreisher (Ashtabula/ Edgewood) and sophomore third baseman Scott Nealon (Avon Lake) each had a hit.

On the mound, sophomore lefthander Scott Luthman (Celina) started and pitched the first four and one-third innings before giving way to freshman southpaw Nick Flanigan (Wadsworth) who pitched the next four and two-thirds innings. Sophomore righthander Brian Boveington (Stow/ Stow-Munrow Falls) came in to pitch the 10th and 11th innings and was tagged with the loss to fal to 0-1 overall. 

The Yellow Jackets will resume play on Wednesday, March 12 with a doubleheader against Eastern Nazarene (Mass.) College beginning at 2:00 p.m.
