BEREA, OHIO -- Behind the back-to-back shutout pitching by junior righthander Brandon Fredericks (Copley/ Revere) and sophomore righty Justin Noval (Strongsville) and the hitting of sophomore first baseman Brian Boveington (Stow/ Stow-Munroe Falls), the Baldwin-Wallace College baseball team swept a doubleheader today (Monday, March 10, 2008) from Penn State-Abington (Pa.), 12-0 and 1-0, at the Gene Cusic Classic in Ft. Myers, Florid during B-W’s annual spring break trip.
With its wins, B-W is now 3-0 overall and plays Haverford (Pa.) College tomorrow at 5:00 p.m. Overall, B-W plays 10 games in its seven days in Ft. Myers.
In the first game, B-W gained a 1-0 lead with a run in the bottom of the third and added another in the fourth for a 2-0 lead. The Yellow Jackets increased their advantage to 6-0 with four runs in the fifth and blew the contest open with a six-run sixth.
On the mound in the first game, Fredericks limited PSU-Abington to just three base hits, struck out six batters and allowed three bases-on-balls (walks). Just one PSU-Abington runner reached third base as Fredericks was in control the entire contest and is 1-0 overall.
At the plate, B-W pounded out 14 base hits in the opener, led by senior shortstop Nick Radca (Amherst/ Steele) with three safeties, including a double, two runs scored and a run batted-in. Sophomore first baseman Brian Boveington (Stow/ Stow-Munroe Falls) had a pair of hits, including a three-run homerun in the fifth. The homer was the first of his career.
In addition to Radca and Boveington, senior centerfielder Cody Kidd (Wellington), junior first baseman Riley Kreisher (Ashtabula/ Edgewood), junior catcher Brandon Roberts (Berlin Heights/ Milan Edison) and sophomore third baseman Scott Nealon (Avon Lake) each had a pair of hits.
In the second game, B-W and PSU-Abington were locked in a 0-0 scoreless duel until the top of the seventh. B-W sophomore leftfielder Chris Nealon (Avon Lake) led off the top of the seventh with a walk. He was replaced by Kidd as a pinch runner. Kidd then stole second base and moved to third when the catchers throw to second base was wild. He scored the game-winning run via a game-winning single by freshman CF Rob Riley (Batavia/ Western Brown).
On the mound, Novak was superb as he allowed just four base hits, struck out two, did not allow a walk, did not allow a PSU-Abington runner past second base and retired the final eight batters of the game as he is now 1-0 overall.
Following its games tomorrow versus Haverford, B-W plays a doubleheader against Eastern Nazarene (Mass.) College on Wednesday, March 12 with the first pitch of the first game scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
