Baldwin Wallace Baseball Team Opens Season With 18-8 Win Over Emerson (Mass.) College

BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin Wallace University baseball team won its season-opening game today (Sunday, March 9, 2008), 18-8, over Emerson (Mass.) College in the Gene Cusic Classic in Fort Myers, Florida.

With the win, the Yellow Jackets start the season 1-0 overall and Emerson’s loss drops it to 0-1 overall.

BW jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, but Emerson quickly answered with five runs in the top of the second.  BW regained the lead in the bottom of the third with a four-run attack and Emerson again countered with two tallies in the top of the fourth.  The Yellow Jackets scored two runs in the bottom half of that inning, and after Emerson tallied a lone run in the top of the fifth, BW took the lead for good in the bottom of the sixth with a six-run explosion.  Another four runs in the bottom of the seventh invoked the 10-run mercy rule and BW ended the game 18-8 before the seventh inning was over.

On the mound for Baldwin Wallace was junior righthander Jim Jaskowak (Grove City, Pa./ Grove City) who pitched three and two-thirds innings and gave up seven runs (all earned) on 11 hits.  Sophomore righty Jim Palko (Euclid) came in with two outs in the fourth and retired the first batter he faced to end the inning.  He retired the side in order in the sixth inning and only faced four batters in the seventh inning as he gave up just one walk.  Jaskowak finished the day with four strikeouts and gave up just one free pass.  Palko finished his first outing with three strikeouts and gave up just one run, which was unearned.

At the plate, the Yellow Jacket offense was led by senior outfielder Shaun Slater (Wooster/ Norwayne) who was a perfect five-for-five, including four singles and a double to go with four runs-batted-in and three runs scored.  BW’s rout was also aided by multi-hit days from senior shortstop Nick Radca (Amherst/ Marion Steele) who tallied a double and two RBI, junior All-OAC first baseman Riley Kreisher (Ashtabula/ Edgewood) who belted a triple and knocked in two runs, junior third baseman Jake Gross (West Farmington/ Warren Champion) had a double, and senior outfielder Kevin Shenker (Twinsburg) added two singles.

BW next plays on Monday, March 10 when it will play Penn State Abington (Pa.) at Terry Park in Fort Myers in a double-header beginning at 10:00 a.m.
