Baldwin Wallace University Ties Case Western as Game is Called After 12 Innings
BEREA, OHIO — The Baldwin Wallace University baseball team and Case Western Reserve University ended their non- conference game in a 6-6 tie today (Thursday, April 3, 2008) after the umpires halted the game due to darkness after the end of the 12th inning.
The tie gives the Yellow Jackets a 9-7-1 overall and record while they remain 2-2 in the OAC. Case Western is now 3-13-1.
After a run in each of the first two innings by Case, the Jackets got on the board in their half of the second after senior outfielder Kevin Shenker (Twinsburg) scored on a pass ball. An RBI single by All-OAC junior outfielder Cody Kidd (Wellington) tied the contest up at two.
The game remained scoreless until the sixth inning where the Spartans struck again capitalizing on an error in the outfield after Haley’s single. Baldwin Wallace knotted up the score again in the seventh when an RBI single by senior infielder Nick Radca (Amherst/ Marion Steele) made the game 3-3. The Jackets then took the lead an inning later at 4-3 when sophomore catcher Matt Bush (Grafton/ Midview) had a single and an RBI.
Case scored again in the ninth inning to tie things up at four and added two more in the twelfth to bring the score to 6-4. In the bottom of the twelfth inning a two-run single by senior infielder Nate Luken (Dayton/Chaminade Julienne) tied things up before the game was called by the umpires.
On the mound, sophomore righthander Cory Hanawalt (Doylestown/ SVSM) started and earned a no decision to keep his record at 1-1 as he pitched five complete innings, giving up two runs on five hits. Freshman southpaw Nick Flanigan (Wadsworth) worked three innings giving up one unearned run on two hits while striking out one batter. In the ninth, sophomore Brian Boveington (Stow/ Stow-Munroe Falls) gave up one run on three hits. Sophomore righty Chris Nealon (Avon Lake) gave up two runs on five hits over the final three innings.
At the plate, Luken and Kidd led the way with three hits apiece with two RBI’s and one RBI respectively. Also, Shenker and junior All-OAC firstbaseman Riley Kreisher (Ashtabula/Edgewood) added had two hits and one walk apiece.
The Yellow Jackets will next play a doubleheader Saturday, April 5 against OAC rival Ohio Northern University at Heritage Field in Berea. The first game is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.
