BW Baseball Team Beats Worcester Polytechnic (Mass.), 12-4, in Ft. Myers, Florida

BEREA, OHIO The Baldwin Wallace University baseball team defeated Worcester (Mass.) Polytechnic Institute, 12-4, today (Wednesday, March 7, 2007) on its annual spring break trip at the Gene Cusic Classic Tournament in Ft. Myers, Florida.

The Yellow Jackets, 3-2 overall, ended a brief two-game losing streak. WPI is 2-5 overall after its loss.

On the mound, sophomore righthander Alex Walker (Massillon/Perry) started and earned the win to 1-0 overall. Walker pitched five and one-thirds innings, allowed four base hits, three earned runs, struck out four and allowed three base-on-balls. Senior righthander J.D. Fullerton (Cuyahoga Falls) came in and pitched a scoreless one and two-thirds innings and junior righthander Kevin Shenker (Twinsburg) came in and pitched two scoreless innings to finish the game.

Offensively, Junior shortstop Nick Radca (Amherst/Marion Steele) and sophomore designated hitter Matt Bolte (Jupiter, Fla./William T. Dwyer) each had three hits to lead the 14-hit attack.  Bolte had his first homerun of the season and ended the game with a pair of runs batted-in.  Junior second baseman Nate Luken (Dayton/Chaminade-Julienne) and senior catcher Bob Storesina(Canton/GlenOak) each had a pair of runs batted-in. Sophomore center fielder Cody Kidd (Wellington) had two stolen bases and a double.

The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Thursday, March 8 when they will play a nonleague doubleheader against Ohio Athletic Conference and Cleveland cross-town rival John Carroll University as a replacement to games that were cancelled versus Bluffton (Ohio) University due to its March 2 bus tragedy on its way to Florida.
