BEREA, OHIO --  The Baldwin Wallace University baseball team swept an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader from host Ohio Northern University, 2-0 and 3-2, today (Saturday, April 28, 2007) at Wander Field in Ada.

In the first game, BW freshman pitcher Jim Palko (Euclid), this week’s OAC Pitcher of the Week, stretched his scoreless innings streak to 15 straight as he tossed the first six innings before giving way to senior catcher/ “stopper” Bob Storesina (Canton/ GlenOak) who pitched the seventh to preserve the shutout and earn his second save of the season. Palko improved to 2-0 overall as he allowed four hits and struck out five Polar Bear batters en route to the win, and also lowered his season earned run average to 1.46 overall.

The Yellow Jackets scored once in the first inning and another in the third to give Palko and Storesina all the runs they would need to win the opener. Offensively, sophomore designated hitter Matt Bolte (Jupiter, Fla./ William T. Dwyer) and sophomore third baseman Jake Gross (West Farmington/ Warren Champion) each had a pair of base hits. Sophomore centerfielder Cody Kidd (Wellington) scored both BW runs and had a stolen base, his 15th in 16 tries this season.

In the nightcap, BW overcame a pair of ONU runs in the bottom of the second inning to score once in the top of the fourth and twice more in the fifth to earn the sweep.

Offensively, Kidd and Gross each had a pair of base hits and scored one run. Kidd also had a triple and the two RBI in the two-run fifth inning for the game-winning hit.

On the mound, senior Brian Pille (Lorain/ Catholic) pitched the first six innings to gain the win and improve to 3-2 overall and Storesina tossed another scoreless seventh inning for his third save of the season. Pille allowed two Polar Bear hits and a pair of unearned runs and struck out two batters.  Storesina struck out two ONU Batters in the seventh and has now allowed just one earned run in 10 total innings pitched (0.90 season earned run average).
