Baldwin Wallace University Baseball Splits Series with Mount Union College, 11-10 and 9-0, in Alliance
BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin Wallace University baseball team split an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader with Mount Union College losing the first game, 11-10, and winning the second game, 9-0, today (Wednesday, April 18th) at 23rd Street Field in Alliance
The Yellow Jackets are now 10-15 overall and 4-6 in the OAC. Mount Union fell to 9-16 overall and 3-7 in the OAC.
In the first game, Mount Union gained a 2-0 lead with two runs in the bottom of the first and BW tied the score 2-2 with two runs of their own in the third inning. BW took their first lead of the game when they scored two runs in the fourth inning. However, Mount Union would answer by scoring five of their own in the next half of the fourth inning. The Yellow Jackets scored three runs in the fifth and no runs in the sixth while Mount Union only scored one run in the fifth and three runs in the sixth. BW made a last minute effort in the seventh inning, scoring three runs only to fall short 11-10.
On the mound, freshman Corey Hanawalt (Doylestown/St. Vincent-St. Mary) earned his first start in his collegiate career for the Yellow Jackets. He pitched three innings and allowed three base hits. Sophomore, Brandon Fredericks (Copley/ Richfield Reserve) earned the loss while pitching two innings giving up five runs on five hits and stricking out two. Freshman, Justin Novac (Strongsville) pitched one scoreless inning while giving up one hit. The hitting attack was led by senior catcher Bob Storesina (Canton/GlenOak) with three base hits and one run batted-in. He also scored three times for the YellowJackets.
In the nightcap, The Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first, scored two runs in the third, one in the fourth, two in the fifth and three more in the sixth inning all the while shutting out Mount Union 9-0
On the mound, sophomore Jim Palko (Euclid) tossed a complete game shut-out while giving up two hits and strucking out three Purple Raiders as he improved to a perfect 1-0 this season. At the plate, sophomore first baseman Riley Kreisher (Ashtabula/ Edgewood), sophomore centerfielder Cody Kidd (Wellington), senior designated hitter Matt Bolte (Jupiter, Fla.) and junior outfielder Shawn Slater led the way as each had three hits for the Yellow Jackets.
The Yellow Jackets will play at Heritage Field tomorrow, Thursday, April 19 when they host Myers University at 2:00 p.m. BW remains at home on Saturday, April 21 when it plays an OAC doubleheader against Wilmington College at 1:00 p.m.
