The Baldwin Wallace University Baseball Team Loses an OAC Doubleheader to Marietta College
BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin Wallace University baseball team ended its 2007 season today (Saturday, May 5) by losing an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader at Marietta College at Don Schaly Field in Marietta. The Pioneers won the first game, 5-3, and then captured the nightcap, 10-1, in four and a half innings as the game was called because of bad weather in the middle of the fifth inning.
With its losses, the Yellow Jackets end the season at 15-20 overall and 8-10 in the OAC and will not qualify for next week’s four-team OAC Playoffs. Marietta is 28-11 overall and 13-5 in the OAC.
In the first game, Marietta scored three times in the bottom of the second inning, including a pair following a controversial call, to take a 3-0 lead. BW scored once in the top of the fifth inning to get as close as 3-1. To score their run, senior catcher Bob Storesina (Canton/ GlenOak) doubled, moved to third on a single by junior rightfielder Kevin Shenker (Twinsburg) and scored via a throwing error by the centerfielder. Marietta then answered two insurance runs via a homerun and a groundout. BW attempted one more comeback and scored twice in the seventh, one on an RBI single by Shenker, but it was not enough to catch the Pioneers.
Despite the loss and offensively, the Yellow Jackets outhit the Pioneers at 9-7with sophomore third baseman Jake Gross (Warren/ Champion), Storesina and Shenker each having a pair of safeties. Both of Storesina’s hits were doubles. On the mound, freshman righthander Jim Palko (Euclid) started and tossed six innings, allowed seven hits, five runs (all earned), struck out three Pioneer batters and walked four others. He took the loss to fall to 2-1 overall and ended his first collegiate season with a solid 2.64 earned run average.
In the nightcap,BW took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when sophomore designated hitter Mike Bolte (Jupiter, Fla./William T. Dwyer) hit an RBI single, scoring junior shortstop Nick Radca (Amherst). Then the Pioneers would score four runs in both the first and second innings to lead 8-1 before adding two more runs in the fourth inning and going onto the 10-1 win.
Offensively, sophomore centerfielder Cody Kidd (Wellington) was perfect three-for-three to lead the Yellow Jackets.
On the mound, senior "staff ace" Clayton Kynkor (Auburn Township/ Kenston)) started and tossed two innings, allowed seven hits, eight runs (five earned), struck out one Pioneer and waled three batters. Senior Jim Wochele (Richmond Heights) came in and pitched two innings, giving four runs (two earned) while walking two batters.
