BW Baseball Team Belts Hiram, 19-1, in Season-Opener in Florida

BEREA, OHIO The Baldwin Wallace University baseball team successfully opened its 2007 season today (Sunday, March 4) with a solid, 19-1 victory against traditional rival Hiram College at the annual Gene Cusic Classic Tournament in Ft. Myers, Florida.

The Yellow Jackets, 1-0 overall, scored four runs in the first and Hiram tallied its lone run in the bottom of the frame. BW in creased its lead steadily by scoring once in the fourth, five times in the fifth, three more in the sixth, twice in the seventh and four times in the eighth.

Senior righthander Clayton Kynkor (Auburn Township/ Kenston) gained the win on the mound. He pitched six strong innings, allowed five hits and one earned run and struck out seven batters and allowed just one base-on-balls. Senior J.D. Fullerton (Cuyahoga Falls) came in and tossed a pair of scoreless innings and struck out three and freshman Brian Boveington (Stow/ Stow-Munroe Falls) pitched a scoreless ninth and struck out one.

Offensively, transfer catcher/ designated hitter Matt Bolte (Jupiter, Fla./ William T. Dwyer) and junior second baseman Nate Luken (Dayton/ Chaminade-Julienne) led the way with three hits each in the 18-hit attack. Junior shortstop Nick Radca (Amherst/ Steele), sophomore first baseman Riley Kreisher (Ashtabula/ Edgewood), junior leftfielder Shaun Slater (Wooster/ Norwayne), senior catcher Bob Storesina (Canton/ GlenOak) and junior 3B Gerald Breedlove (Painesville/ Riversided) each had a pair of base hits. One of Storesina's hits was his first homerun of the season.

The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Monday (March 5) when they play Thiel (Pa.) College at 9:00 a.m. in Ft. Myers.
