The Baldwin Wallace University Baseball Team Splits an OAC Doubleheader With Heidelberg College

BEREA, OHIO --  The Baldwin Wallace University baseball team split an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader against Heidelberg College today (Saturday, April 28, 2007) on Seniors’ Day at Heritage Field in Berea. The Student Princes came back to win the opener, 7-6, and the Yellow Jackets won the nightcap, 10-7.

With its split, the Yellow Jackets are now 15-18 overall and 8-8 in the OAC and end the regular season next Saturday, May 5 at Marietta College in a 12:00 noon twinbill. With its split, Heidelberg is now 24-12 overall and 11-5 in the OAC.

In the first game, BW jumped out to a 5-0 advantage by scoring once in the bottom of the first and two more in each the second and third innings. Heidelberg cut the lead to 5-2 with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth inning and then took the lead for good with a five-run sixth inning. BW scored once in the bottom of the sixth and ended the frame by leaving the bases loaded.

Despite the loss and offensively, the Yellow Jackets were led the trio of sophomore first baseman Riley Kreisher (Ashtabula/ Edgewood), junior second baseman Nate Luken (Dayton/ Chaminade-Julienne) and junior leftfielder Shaun Slater (Wooster/ Norwayne) as all three had a pair of base hits. Kreisher had a pair of homeruns, two runs scored and three runs batted-in. Slater had a double, run scored and an RBI. Luken also had an RBI.

On the mound, senior Clayton Kynkor (Auburn Township/ Kenston) started and took the loss to fall to 4-4 overall this season and 14-8 in his career. Kynkor pitched the first five and two-third innings before giving way to senior J.D. Fullerton (Cuyahoga Falls), making his school-record 41st career relief appearance. Then Fullerton gave way to sophomore Brandon Fredericks (Akron/ Revere).

In the nightcap, the Student Princes jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning before BW added a pair of runs of its own in the bottom half of the stanza to tie it at 2-2. The Jackets’ then took a brief 3-2 lead with a run in the second before Heidelberg took back the lead with two runs in the top of the third. Undaunted, BW scored four times in the bootom of the third to lead, 7-4. After a scoreless fourth, Heidelberg again tied the game with three runs in the top of the fifth to make it 7-7. Again, BW came right back with three runs of its own in the bottom of the fifth to take a 10-7 lead. A scoreless sixth and seventh innings then led to a BW split of the twinbill.

Offensively, BW made the most of its six base hits, including two by sophomore designated hitter Matt Bolte (Jupiter, Fla./ William T. Dwyer), and took advantage of 11 Student Prince walks and two hits-batsmen to score its 10 runs. Junior shortstop Nick Radca (Amherst/ Marion Steele) scored three runs. Kreisher walked four times in the second game.

On the mound, sophomore Jim Jaskowak (Grove City, Pa./ Grove City) started. He went the first four  innings before giving way to senior righthander Jim Wochele (Richmond Heights), who pitched the fifth inning. Wochele gained the victory to improve to 2-3 overall as he allowed just one base hit, struck out one Heidelberg batter and did not allow a run. Senior catcher/ “stopper” Bob Storesina (Canton/ GlenOak) came in and pitched the sixth and seventh innings to record his third save in the last two days and fourth this season. Storesina has now allowed just one earned run in 11 innings pitched this season.
