BW Baseball Team Loses Twice to 10th-Ranked and Division II Central Missouri State
BEREA, OHIO — The Baldwin Wallace University baseball team lost both games of a doubleheader today (Tuesday, March 6, 2007) to 10th-ranked and NCAA Division II Central Missouri State University on its annual spring break trip at the Gene Cusic Classic Tournament in Ft. Myers, Florida.
The Yellow Jackets, 2-2 overall, lost to 4-3 to the Mules in the first game and dropped an 11-5 decision in the nightcap. CMSU is 13-2 overall after its sweep.
In the first game, CMSU built a 4-0 lead with a apir of runs in each the second and fourth innings before the Yellow Jackets scored three times in the bottom of the fifth inning to close to within 4-3. But that was as close as BW would get to the Mules.
On the mound, senior righthander Brian Pille (Lorain/ Catholic) started and took the loss to fall to 0-1 overall. Pille pitched six innings, allowed seven base hits, four earned runs, struck out three and allowed three bases on balls. Senior righthander J.D. Fullerton (Cuyahoga Falls) pitched a scoreless inning in relief of Pille.
Offensively, BW had five base hits with sophomore first baseman Riley Kreisher (Conneaut/ Ashtabula/ Edgewood), junior third baseman Gerald Breedlove (Painesville/ Riverside), senior catcher Bob Storesina (Canton/ GlenOak), sophomore leftfielder Jon Bierman (North Royalton/ Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy) and junior second baseman Nate Luken (Dayton/ Chaminade) each getting a safety. Luken also had a pair of runs batted-in.
In the nightcap, CMSU scored four times in the first inning and added two more in the second and one in the third to build a 7-0 lead. BW losed to within 7-2 with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth, but the Mules added four in the bottom of the frame. BW scored its final three runs in the seventh frame.
On the mound, senior righthander Jim Wochele (Richmond Heights) started and took the loss. He was followed to the mound by freshman Scott Luthman (Celina) and sophomore Jim Palko (Euclid).
Offensively, BW had five base hits as Luken, Kreisher, Breedlove, sophomore catcher Matt Bolte (Jupiter, Fla/ William T. Dwyer) and junior Mike Brisky (Berea) each had a safety. Breedlove also had a pair of RBI.
The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Wednesday, March 7 when they play a single junior varsity game at 9:00 a.m. against Seton Hill (Pa.) University and then a single varsity game against Worcester (Mass.) Polytechnic at 12:00 p.m. In addition, BW will play a nonleague doubleheader tomorrow (march 8) against Ohio Athletic Conference and Cleveland cross-town rival John Carroll University as a replacement to games that were cancelled versus Bluffton (Ohio) College due to its March 2 buss tragedy on its way to Florida.
