The Yellow Jacket Baseball Team Ends its Season by Splitting a Doubleheader

With Wiliminton, Losing 5-1 and Winning 12-2

BEREA, OHIO — The Baldwin-Wallace College baseball team split its final Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader today (Saturday, May 7, 2005) at Heritage Field in Berea on Seniors' Day. The Quakers won the first game, 5-1, and the Yellow jackets came back to win the nightcap, 12-2.

With the split, B-W ends its season with an 18-12 overall and 10-8 OAC record. With its win in the first game, Wilmington clinched its first-ever OAC Tournament berth and advances to next weekend's OAC tourney with a 22-13 overall and 11-7 OAC slate.

In the first game, Wilmington opened the scoring with a run in the top of the first inning before the Yellow Jackets fought back with a tally in the bottom half of the inning to tie the score at 1-1 when junior rightfielder Dan Melito (Massillon/ Washington) doubled and then scored on a single by senior third baseman Mike Turchan (Mayfield). The Quakers then added a pair of runs in the third to lead 3-1 and added another pair of insurance runs in the sixth en route to the win.

On the mound, Quaker freshman pitcher Kenny Branscome handcuffed the Yellow Jackets and allowed just four base hits before giving way to sophomore Ronnie Campbell with two runners on base and zero outs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Campbell then struck out the first batter he faced and got the next two on groundouts to end the B-W threat.

On the mound for B-W, senior lefthander Aaron Krieger (Bellefontaine) suffered the loss and fell to 4-4 overall. Krieger allowed eight hits, five runs (four earned), struck out two Quaker batters and had one intentional walk. Sophomore Clayton Kynkor (Auburn Township/ Kenston) tossed a scoreless 1-2-3 seventh inning, including a pair of strikeouts.

In the nightcap, B-W scored early and often and put the game away by the fourth inning. B-W tallied twice in the first inning, three times in the second, once in the third and led 6-0 before Wilmington got on the board with two runs in the fourth to get as close as 6-2. B-W put the game away with four runs in the bottom of the fourth and added two more insurance runs in the sixth to gain the split.

On the mound, Mike Turchan gained the win to improve to 2-3 overall. Turchan threw the first six and one-third innings before giving way to senior Andrew Russell (Indianapolis, Indiana/ Eastern Hancock) who threw the final two-thirds of an inning.

At the plate, senior shortstop Jason Albright (Camp Hill, Pennsylvania/ East Pennsboro), senior catcher Pat Gallagher (Wooster/ Senior) and junior centerfielder Matt Green (Elyria/ Senior) each had a pair of hits to lead the way.
