in Ada in an Ohio Athletic Conference Doubleheader
BEREA, OHIO — The Baldwin-Wallace College baseball team won a pair of games against Ohio Athleic Conference rival Ohio Northern, 3-0 and 3-2 today (Saturday, April 9) at Wander Field in Ada.
The Yellow Jackets have won four straight games as they improved to 10-6 overall and 4-2 OAC. With the losses, Ohio Northern falls to 11-8 overall, 1-3 OAC.
In the first game, neither team would score until senior 3B/P Mike Turchan (Mayfield Heights) hit a three-run homerun in the top of the fifth inning to give B-W a 3-0 lead. Solid pitching by senior Aaron Krieger (Bellefontaine) who pitched all seven innings and allowed no hits and struck out six batters to keep Ohio Northern scoreless en route to the 3-0 victory.
Offensively, the Yellow Jackets was led by Turchan with two hits in four attempts including the homerun. Four others each recorded a hit. The Polar Bears failed to put a player on base.
On the mound, Krieger's earned his second win of the season with the no hitter to improve to 2-2 overall. ONU's Brett Auer pitched six innings and was credited with the loss to fall to 4-2 this season.
In the second game, B-W jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a double to center field by senior Jason Albrght (Camp Hill, Pa./ East Pennsboro). Ohio Northern tied the gameat 1-1 in the bottom of the fifth on a Josh Conkey homerun to left field. The Yellow Jackets broke the tie with a two-run sixth inning thanks to a fielding error by the second basemen allowing Albright and junior outfielder Dan Melito (Massillon/ Washington) to score. ONU cut the lead to 3-2 on a Paul Day solo homerun in the bottom half of the inning, but the Polar Bears failed to score anymore runs as B-W went on to win by the score of 3-2 to get the two game sweep.
At the plate, both Albright and junior outfielder Matt Green (Elyria/ Senior) each had two hits. Melito and junior outfielder Mike Farrell (Wickliffe) both went one-for-three at the plate. Conkey led ONU going a perfect two-for-two at the plate including a solo homerun.
On the mound B-W's Clayton Kynkor (Auburn Township/ Kentson) got his second winning season to improve to 2-0 pitching five and two-thirds innings allowing six hits, two runs and two strikeouts. Senior pitcher Bob Glavan (Mentor) replaced Kynkor in the sixth inning and pitched the first half of the seventh giving up no hits or runs and walking two batters. Senior pitcher Andrew Russell (Indianapolis, Ind./ Eastern Hancock) finished the game to record his second save of the year.
ONU's Nick Ornella was credited with the loss pitching five and one-thirds innings allowing six hits, three runs and struck out five batters.
The Yellow Jackets will be back in action on Tuesday, April12 when they host OAC and Cleveland cross-town rival John Carroll University in an OAC doubleheader at Heritage field in Berea. First game is scheduled to being at 1:00 p.m.
