The Baldwin-Wallace College Baseball Team Blasts Traditional Rival Hiram College,

21-6, in Hiram to Improve to 13-6 Overall

BEREA, OHIO — The Baldwin-Wallace College baseball team defeated tgraditional rival Hiram College, 21-6, today (Thursday, April 14, 2005) at Robert O. Fischel Field in Hiram, Ohio. The victory was the seventh straight for the Yellow Jackets.

The Yellow Jackets jumped out to an early, 7-0 first inning lead and never looked back. B-W scored once more in each the second, third and fourth innings and broke the game wide open with a five-run fifth inning to lead, 15-6. The Yellow Jackets added another run in the sixth and five more in the eighth en route to improving to 13-6 overall. With its loss, the Terriers fell to 11-9 overall.

The big blow in the first inning was a three-run homerun by senior catcher Pat Gallagher (Wooster/ Senior). The homer was his first of the season. The other big blow in the game was a grand slam homer by sophomore first baseman Bob Storesina (North Canton/ GlenOak) in the eighth. In addition, junior All-Ohio Athletic Conference rightfielder Dan Melito (Massillon/ Washington) and junior All-OAC leftfielder Mike Farrell (Wickliffe) each hit solo homers.

Offensively. Farrell hit for the cycle (a single, double, triple and homerun) and was four-of-seven at the plate with four runs scored and four runs batted-in, junior first baseman Matt Wilson (Canton/ Jackson) was three-of-five with a single, double and triple, two runs scored and two RBI, and Melito, who entered the game hitting .404 overall, was three-of-five with his homer, two runs scored and two RBI.

On the mound, junior Nick Quarando (Amherst/ Steele) started and three the first three and one-third innings before being relieved by sophomore Clayton Kynkor (Auburn Township/ Kenston), who picked up his third win of the season to improve to 3-0 overall. In addition, senior relief ace Nick Slater (Wooster/ Norwayne) tossed a scoreless seventh and eighth inning and senior Andrew Russell (Indianapolis, Indiana/ Eastern Hancock) threw a scoreless ninth inning. For Slater, he has now pitched nine and two-thirds innings this season and has not allowed an earned run and has a 2-0 mark.

The Yellow Jackets will be back in action on Saturday, April 16 when they host Ohio Athletic Conference rival and 11th-ranked (Collegiate Baseball) Marietta College in an OAC doubleheader at Heritage Field in Berea at 1:00 p.m.
