University, Winning 5-3 and Then Losing 2-1
BEREA, OHIO — The Baldwin-Wallace College baseball team split an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader today (Thursday, April 28, 2005) against OAC-rival Capital University. The Yellow Jackets won the first game, 5-3, and then lost the second game, 2-1.
With the split, B-W is now 15-10 overall and 8-6 in the OAC and hosts nonleague foe Walsh University (28-17 overall) tomorrow in Berea in a single game at 4:30 p.m. With its split, the Crusaders are now 15-16-1 overall and 3-9 in the OAC.
In the first game, B-W scored four times in the first inning to lead 4-0 before Capital tallied once in the fourth to close to within 4-1. The Yellow Jackets added another run in the bottom of the fourth to lead 5-1 and Capital closed out the scoring with a pair of runs in the sixth.
At the plate, senior third baseman/ DH Mike Turchan (Mayfield) and sophomore first baseman Bob Storesina (Canton/ GlenOak) highlighted the four-run first inning as each player blasted a two-run homerun. For Turchan, it was his team-leading seventh. Storesina now has three homers. In the bottom of the fourth, senior catcher Pat Gallagher (Wooster/ Senior) doubled home junior center fielder Matt Green (Elyria/ Senior) with the final run.
On the mound, sophomore Clayton Kynkor (Auburn Township/ Kenston) gained the win on the mound by going the first six plus innings to improve to 4-0 overall. He allowed seven base hits, three runs (two earned) and struck out one batter and did not allow a walk. Kynkor's four wins also leads the team. Senior reliever Andrew Russell (Indianapolis, Ind./ Eastern Hancock) came out of the bullpen to earn his team-leading third save.
In the nightcap, Capital jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a run in the top of the first inning. B-W came back to tie it in the bottom of the sixth at 1-1 and had a chance to take the lead but a bases loaded double play ended that threat. The Crusaders took advantage of that momentum to score the game-winning run in the top of the seventh on a base hit, sacrifice bunt and a two-out single to center field.
Despite the loss, B-W was led offensively by senior shortstop Jason Albright (Camp Hills, Pa./ East Pennsboro) with a pair of base hits. On the mound, Turchan was the hard luck loser and dropped to 1-3 overall despite tossing a complete game. He allowed eight base hits and two runs (both earned), struck out five Crusader batters and did not allow a walk.
In addition to hosting Walsh tomorrow, the Yellow Jackets will be back in action on Saturday, April 30 when they travel to Westerville to play the first place Otterbein College Cardinals in a key OAC twinbill at 1:00 p.m. Next week, B-W will play just a Saturday, May 7 doubleheader at home versus Wilmington College at 1:00 p.m. as it is final exam week in Berea.
