The Magazine Academic All-District IV Team
BEREA, OHIO — Baldwin Wallace College senior pitcher/third baseman Mike Turchan (Mayfield Heights/ Mayfield) and junior second baseman Kevin Brown (Cuyahoga Falls) have been named to the 2005 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District IV team for their efforts on the field and in the classroom.
The teams are voted on by 308 college and university division sports information directors from CoSIDA District IV which includes the states of Ohio, Michigan, Kentucky, Tennessee and Alabama. With their selections, Turchan and Brown advance to the national Academic All-America ballot.
Turchan was a first-team selection for the second consecutive year. He helped lead the Yellow Jackets to an 18-12 overall record and 10-8 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. At the plate, Turchan led the team with a .392 batting average with 38 base hits in 97 at bats including 29 runs scored, five doubles, one triple, nine homeruns and 36 runs batted in. He also had a team-leading .742 slugging percentage and had two stolen bases in three attempts. On the mound, Turchan had a 2-3 record with a 5.14 earned run average. He made seven appearances with seven starts and two complete games. Turchan allowed 51 base hits including 37 runs scored (24 earned runs), 15 walks and struck out 33 batters in 42 innings pitched.
In the classroom, Turchan finished his career with a 3.52 grade point average in athletic training and would like to become an athletic trainer or teacher. Last season, he was also an Academic All-Ohio Athletic Conference selection in addition to his first Academic District IV award.
Brown, a pre-law and business major, carries a 3.53 GPA was a second-team All-District IV selection for the first time in his career. On the playing field, he is one of the top second baseman in the OAC. At the plate, Brown finished the season fourth on the team in batting average at .312 with 24 base hits in 77 at bats including six doubles and eight RBI. He also had a .390 slugging percentage and a .977 fielding percentage defensively.
