Yellow Jackets Defeat Wooster 17-11 in Season Opener
BEREA, OHIO – The Baldwin Wallace baseball team defeated Wooster, 17-11, in the season opener in Fort Meyers, Florida on Monday.
With the win, the Yellow Jackets begin the 2004 season 1-0, while Wooster falls to 0-1 on the season.
Sophomore Mike Farrell (Wickliffe) led the way with three hits, including two home runs and five RBI. Sophomore Kevin Brown (Cuyahoga Falls) had three hits and junior Mike Turchan (Mayfield) had three hits including one home run.
BW jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the first inning after a two-run homer by Farrell. In the second, the Jackets added two more runs to take a 6-0 lead on a home run by Brown and a balk by Wooster pitcher Luke Katich after Turchan doubled and reached third on a passed ball.
In the top half of the fourth inning, Wooster scored three runs and cut the lead in half to trail 6-3. BW answered with three runs of their own in the bottom half when Farrell hit a three-run home run, his second home run of the day. Wooster answered with one run in the fifth, two in the sixth, and four in the seventh to take a 10-9 lead.
The Jackets rallied back in the bottom half of the seventh with three runs to take a 12-10 lead, including an RBI double from senior Ryan Petraitis (Akron Manchester), and RBI singles from junior Jason Albright (Camp Hill, Pa.) and Brown.
Wooster scored one more run in the eighth, but BW put the nail in the coffin with five more runs of their own in their half of the eighth, including Turchan’s first home run of the year.
Junior pitcher Jay Watson (New Philadelphia) pitched one inning giving up two earned runs and receiving the victory, the first of his career. Junior Aaron Krieger (Bellefontaine) pitched the final inning and a third to record the save. Senior Dale Koler (Brunswick) pitched the first four innings allowing two earned runs and striking out seven. Senior Cal Snyder (East Canton) was the first in relief and pitched two complete innings giving up one earned run and freshman Nick Vernon (Louisville) made his first appearance of his BW career pitching two-thirds of an inning and allowing one earned run.
Baldwin Wallace will continue play against Albion College on Monday, March 8 at 12:00 p.m. in Fort Myers, Florida.
