The Baldwin Wallace University Baseball Team Sweeps OAC Rival Wilmington
College, 8-1 and 11-2, in Wilmington
BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin Wallace University baseball team swept Ohio Athletic Conference rival Wilmington College today (Monday, May 3) in an OAC doubleheader in Wilmington by the scores of 8-1 and 11-2.
With the pair of wins, the Yellow Jackets are now 18-12 overall and 7-8 in the OAC. With its two losses, Wilmington is 15-14 overall and 3-11 in the OAC. BW ends its OAC regular season with a pair of games at home against Capital University this Saturday (May 8 at 1:00 p.m.). The Yellow Jackets also host nonlegaue and tradional rival Oberlin College at Heritage Field in Berea on Wednesday in a single game at 4:00 p.m.
In the first game, BW scored three runs in the top of the second and added two more in the third to lead 5-0 before Wilmington scored its lone run in the fourth off of starter and winner, senior Dale Koler (Brunswick). The Yellow Jackets then scored once in the sixth and two more in the seventh to win, 8-1.
Koler went the distance to pick up his fourth win of the season against one loss. It was also his school career-record 22nd victory and improved to 22-10 overall. In seven innings, Koler allowed five hits and one earned run. He struck out seven and walked four.
Offensively, the Yellow jackets had 12 base hits, including three each by junior shortstop Jason Albright (Camp Hills, Pa./ East Pennsboro) and sophomore right fielder Dan Melito (Massillon Washington). Albright had a pair of doubles and a run batted-in. Melito had his fifth homerun of the season and three RBI. In addition, sophomore designated hitter Mike Farrell (Wickliffe) and senior first baseman Ryan Petraitis (Akron/ Manchester) each had a pair of hits. Both of Farrell's safeties were doubles.
In the nightcap, BW scored twice in the second inning before Wilmington tallied single runs in the third and fifth innings to tie the game at 2-2. BW took the lead with a single run in the sixth and broke it open with an eight-run seventh to claim the sweep and make a winner out of junior righthander Mike Turchan (Mayfield).
Turchan threw a complete-game three-hitter to pick up his fourth win against two losses. He allowed two earned runs and struck out five and walked three.
Offensively, BW had 13 base hits, including three more by Albright and two each by Turchan, Melito, junior third baseman Jeff Cicerchi (Strongsville) and sophomore second baseman Kevin Brown (Cuyahoga Falls). Two of Melito's hits were doubles. Albright, who ended the day six-of-eight, drove in four runs and Cicerchi had three.
