The BW Baseball Team Loses a Doubleheader to OAC Rival Otterbein College at Heritage Field in Berea

BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin Wallace University baseball team lost a key Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader today (Saturday, April 24) to Otterbein College, 5-2 in eight innings and 1-0 in eight innings, at Heritage Field in Berea.

With its losses, the Yellow Jackets are now 16-9 overall and 5-6 in the OAC. With its wins, Otterbein improves to 20-9 overall and 9-1 in the OAC.

In the opener, Otterbein tallied three times in the top of the eighth inning to win the game. It was tied 2-2 entering the eighth. The loss dropped BW to 0-3 in extra inning games this year.

Despite the loss, senior lefthanded pitcher Dale Koler (Brunswick) threw another outstanding game but was saddled with his first loss of the season against three wins. Koler went seven and two-thirds innings, allowed eight hits and two earned runs, struck out eight and did not walk a batter. Offensively, BW had eight base hits with junior shortstop Jason Albright (Camp Hills, Pa./ East Pennsboro) and sophomore second baseman Kevin Brown (Cuyahoga Falls) each had a pair of base hits.

Trailing 1-0 entering the bottom of the third inning, BW scored both of its runs when senior first baseman Ryan Petraitis (Akron/ Manchester) singled, moved to third on a one-out double by Brown and scored on a single by Albright. Brown then scored a batter later when senior left fielder Greg Wisniewski (Brunswick) singled.

In the nightcap, BW's Mike Turchan (Mayfield Heights) and Otterbein's Robert Benjamin hooked up in a pitcher's duel with Otterbein scoring the winning run in the top of the eighth inning to pull off the sweep.

On the mound, Turchan pitched all eight innings, allowed five hits, one earned run, struck out out five and walked two but fell to 3-2 overall. Offensively, Albright and sophomore designated hitter Mike Farrell (Wickliffe) each had a pair of base hits.

The Yellow Jackets will be back in action on Tuesday, April 27 when they end their homestand with a single nine-inning game against traditional rival Hiram College at Heritage Field at 3:30 p.m.
