The Baldwin Wallace University Baseball Team Splits Pair of Games With Eastern

Nazarene (Mass.) College in Ft. Myers, Florida

BEREA, OHIO - The Baldwin Wallace University baseball team split a doubleheader with Eastern Nazarene (Mass.) College Today (March 9) in Ft. Myers, Florida to improve its spring trip record to 3-1 overall.  The Yellow Jackets lost the first game, 9-7, and won the nightcap, 6-4.

In the first game, the BW offense only managed five hits.  Three were homeruns that produced six of its seven runs.

The Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 2-0 lead when junior third baseman Mike Turchan (Mayfield Heights/ Mayfield) hit his third home run of the season and third in as many games this year.  ENC then took the lead as it tallied four runs in the second inning and two more in the third to lead, 6-2.  In the bottom of the third stanza, BW struck again as sophomoresecond baseman Kevin Brown (Cuyahoga Falls) hit his second home run of the year to bring the Yellow Jackets within two runs at 6-4.  Nazarene then added a single tally in the top of the fourth to lead 7-4.  The Jackets' responded with three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to tie the game at 7-7.   Junior first baseman Jim Yezbak (Strongsville) singled and scored on junior shortstop Jason Albrightís (Camp Hill, Pa./ East Pennsboro) first home run of the year.  The other run came across when Turchan walked and later scored on a double by sophomore rightfielder Dan Melito (Massillon Washington).  Nazarene added a single run in each of the fifth and the sixth innings to make the final score 9-7.

In the nightcap, Turchan highlighted the 6-4 win both on the mound and at the plate.  He pitched a complete seven-inning game by allowing three earned runs on five hits.  He struck out five batters.  The win was his first of the season and the sixth overall in his career.  Turchan also led the hitting attack with a double and a triple and two runs batted-in. He also reached base in all four plate appearances.  Joining him with two hits were Albright and Melito.

Nazarene struck first when it scored twice in the bottom of the second inning.  In the top of the third, Albright tripled and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Melito.  In the fourth, senior 1B Ryan Petraitis (Akron/ Manchester) walked and scored on junior catcher Pat Gallagherís (Wooster/ Senior) one-out RBI single which tied the score at 2-2.  In the bottom half of the fourth, ENC added a single tally to lead, 3-2.  During the top of the fifth, BW knotted the score at 3-3 when Turchanís double scored Albright.  In the bottom of the fifth, ENC once again grabbed the lead by scoring a single run before the Jackets' took the lead for good in the sixth when Turchan hit a two-run triple that plated Brown and junior leftfielder Nick Slater (Wooster/ Norwayne) to give BW a 6-4 lead.  Both Brown and Slater reached on walks.

The Yellow Jackets are back in action today (March 10) when they play a doubleheader against Dominican (Ill.) University with games at 9:00 a.m. and noon in Fort Myers.
