Senior Ace Lefthander Dale Koler Ties the Career Win Mark, But BW Splits at

Muskingum, Winning 13-2 and Losing 5-4

BEREA, OHIO -- Baldwin Wallace University senior lefthanded ace Dale Koler (Brunswick) tied the Yellow Jacket career victory record in the opener as BW went on to split an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader today (Monday, April 5, 2004) in New Concord and at Muskingum College. BW won the opener, 13-2, but lost the nightcap, 5-4.

With its split, BW is now 9-4 overall and 1-2 in the OAC. With its split, Muskingum is now 9-8 overall and 1-3 in the OAC.

Koler earned his 20th career victory against nine losses in the opener and tied Max Newill (1995-98) for the career win record. Koler allowed two first-inning runs and went the first six innings to improve to 2-0 this spring. For the game, he allowed four base hits and struck out five batters. So far in 2004, Koler is 2-0 with 35 strikeouts in 24 innings pitched. For his career, Koler has 212 strikeouts in 198 innings pitched. Junior Bob Glavan (Mentor) pitched the seventh inning.

Offensively, BW broke the game open with a nine-run fourth inning that was highlighted by a grand slam by junior catcher Adam Pajakowski (South Bend, Ind./ St. Joseph's). The homer was Pajakowski's first career homer. In addition to Pajakowski, junior third baseman Mike Turchan (Mayfield Heights/ Mayfield), the OAC's leading hitter, hit his sixth round-tripper of the spring -- a two-run shot -- and drove in three runs, and sophomore designated hitter Mike Farrell (Wickliffe) also hit a two-run homer and drove in three runs. Turchan, Farrell, junior shortstop Jason Albright (Camp Hills, Pa./ East Pennsboro), sophomore centerfielder Matt Green (Elyria Senior) and sophomore second baseman Kevin Brown (Cuyahoga Falls) each had two base hits for BW.

In the nightcap, the Fighting Muskies tallied two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning off BW ace reliever Aaron Krieger (Bellefontaine) to win the game. The two runs were the first two that Krieger has allowed all season in 11 innings pitched.

Prior to the seventh, BW tallied single runs in the first three frames and another in the fifth to offset Muskingum's single tallies in the first, third and fourth and led 4-3. Turchan pitched the first six innings and allowed five hits before giving way to Krieger.

The Yellow Jackets will be back in action tomorrow (April 6) when they host Cleveland cross-town and nonleague rival Case Western Reserve University in a single nine-inning game at Heritage Field beginning at 3:30 p.m. In addition this week, BW will host nonleague foe Malone College in a doubleheader at Heritage Field on Thursday with the first pitch being tossed at 2:00 p.m. and the Yellow Jackets will also travel to Alliance on Saturday for an OAC doubleheader against Mount Union College at 1:00 p.m.
