Koler Breaks Record as the Baseball Team Sweeps OAC Arch-Rival Mount Union, 2-1 and 8-1

BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin Wallace University baseball team improved to 13-4 overall today with an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader sweep of OAC arch-rival Mount Union College, 2-1 and 8-1, at the 23rd Street Field in Alliance. In the opener, Yellow Jacket senior ace lefthanded pitcher Dale Koler (Brunswick) set a BW career record for victories.

In addition to improving to 13-4 overall, the Yellow Jackets are also 3-2 in the OAC.

In the opener, Koler tossed a complete-game four-hitter at the Purple Raiders for his 21st career win and surpassed Max Newill (1995-98) as the all-time winningest pitcher in Yellow Jacket history. Koler struck out six to improve to 3-0 this season and 21-9 for his career. In his four years, Koler has now struck out 218 batters in 205 career innings pitched.

Trailing 1-0 after four innings, BW took the lead and essentially gave Koler the record in the fifth when junior third baseman Mike Turchan (Mayfield) singled and scored when sophomore designated hitter Mike Farrell (Wickliffe) slammed his fourth homerun of the season. Turchan and Farrell each had two hits to pace the BW offense. Turchan also extended a hitting streak to 17 games in the opener.

In the nightcap, it was more Turchan and Farrell. But Turchan not only had two more hits, including a three-run triple in the eight-run fourth inning, to extend his hitting streak to 18 games dating back to last year; he was also the winning pitcher to improve to 3-0 on the season.

Turchan tossed a complete-game seven hitter and struck out seven. At the plate, he had a single and the triple. Farrell had three more hits in the game and the duo was joined by junior catcher Pat Gallagher (Wooster Senior) with a pair of base hits. Amazingly after 17 games this year, Turchan is batting .565 overall.

The Yellow Jackets will be back in action on Tuesday, April 13 when they host nonleague foe Tiffin University in a doubleheader at Heritage Field in Berea at 1:00 p.m. Also next week, BW is at seventh-ranked Wooster on Thursday, April 15 for a single nine-inning game and then hosts OAC rival and nationally-ranked Marietta College in an OAC twinbill on Saturday, April 17 in Berea at 1:00 p.m.
