The Yellow Jacket Baseball Team Loses Twice to 11th-Ranked Marietta College,
7-4 in 10 innings and 4-1, in Berea
BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin Wallace University baseball team lost an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader today (April 17) to 11th-ranked Marietta College, 7-4 in 10 innings and 4-1.
With its losses, the Yellow Jackets fall to 13-7 overall and 3-4 in the OAC. With its wins, Marietta is now 23-5 overall and 8-0 in the OAC.
In the opener, BW and Marietta played three extra innings before the Pioneer freshman Nick Capowski hit a grandslam homerun in his first collegiate at-bats in the top of the 10th inning to give Marietta its first game win. Marietta struck first with two runs in the top of the first inning and led 2-1 after one frame. BW came back to tie the game in the sixth when junior leftfielder Greg Wisniewski (Brunswick) hit his first homerun of the season to make it a 2-2 tie. Marietta went back on top with a run in the top of the seventh and BW tied it in the bottom of the frame to make it 3-3 and set up Capowski's heroics.
Despite the loss, BW senuor lefthanded ace pitcher Dale Koler (Brunswick) pitched outstanding baseball for the first nine innings. Koler allowed just eight hits and three earned runs and struck out 13 Pioneers. He dropped to 3-1 overall. Offensively, BW was led by junior third baseman Mike Turchan (Mayfield), junior shortstop Jason Albright (Camp Hill, Pa./ East Pennsboro), sophomore rightfielder Dan Melito (Massillon Washington), Wisniewski and sophomore first baseman Matt Wilson (Canton South) each with two base hits.
In the nightcap, Marietta scored twice in the second inning and added one runin each of the fourth and sixth innings en route to the twinbill sweep. Despite the loss, Turchan threw a solid six innings on the mound and dropped to 3-1 overall. Albright led the hitting attack with two safeties.
The Yellow Jackets will be back in action on Tuesday, April 20 when they host OAC and Cleveland cross-town rival John Carroll University in an OAC twinbill at 1:00 p.m. In addition, BW will host nonlegaue foe Tiffin University in a rescheduled single seven inning game on Wednesday, April 21 at 2:00 p.m. (a J.V. game will follow), host Cleveland cross-town and nonleague rival Case Western Reserve University in a single nine-inning game on Thursday, April 22 at 3:30 p.m. and end the homestand by hosting defending OAC Tournament champion Otterbein College on Saturday, April 24 in a doubleheader at 1:00 p.m. All games will be played at Heritage Field on Eastland Road in Berea and located on the BW campus.
