The Yellow Jacket Baseball Team Defeats Malone, 14-6

BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin Wallace University baseball team won its second straight game as it defeated nonleague foe Malone College, 14-6, today (April 8, 2004), at Heritage Field in Berea. With its win, BW improved to 11-4 overall. Malone dropped to 10-8 overall.

The Yellow Jackets scored four first-innings run and built a 12-0 advantage after six innings before Malone tallied four times in the seventh inning and two in the eighth to make the game closer. BW then added a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth to close out the scoring.

Offensively, BW pounded out 14 base hits. Sophomore rightfielder Dan Melito (Massillon Washington) was one of five Yellow Jackets to each have a pair of base hits. Melito had a pair of doubles and four runs batted-in. Melito was joined by sophomore second baseman Kevin Brown (Cuyahoga Falls), junioir shortstop Jason Albright (Camp Hill, Pa./ East Pennsboro), junior third baseman Mike Turchan (Mayfield Heights/ Mayfield) and sophomore designated hitter Mike Farrell (Wickliffe) each had two hits. With his two safeties, Turchan extended his hitting streak to 16 games.

On the mound, freshman lefthander Rob Lewis (Margaretta) gained his second win of the season against zero losses and kept his earned run average perfect as he threw the first four innings and allowed just one hits, no runs, struck out two and walked two. Lewis now has a 0.00 ERA after nine innings pitched. Lewis was followed to the mound by juniors Jay Watson (New Philadelphia), Lawrence Hall (Elyria/ Senior) and Aaron Krieger (Bellefontaine). Krieger tossed a scoreless ninth inning.

The Yellow Jackets will be back in action on Saturday (April 10) when they travel to Alliance, Ohio for an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader against Mount Union College at 1:00 p.m.
