The Yellow Jacket Baseball Team Sweeps OAC and Cleveland Rival John Carroll

in Berea, 7-6 and 4-3 in Extra Innings

BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin Wallace University baseball team swept an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader today (April 20) against OAC and Greater Cleveland rival John Carroll University at Heritage Field in Berea. The Yellow Jackets won the first game, 6-5, and captured the nightcap, 4-3 in eight innings. In both games, BW won in its final at-bat.

With its sweep of its OAC arch-rival, the Yellow Jackets are now 15-7 overall and 5-4 in the OAC. With its two losses, JCU is now 14-10 overall and 6-4 in the OAC.

In the opener, BW sophomore designated hitter Mike Farrell (Wickliffe) and sophomore rightfielder Dan Melito (Massillon Washington) had back-to-back doubles in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the Yellow Jackets the 7-6 victory.

BW broke a 0-0 tie in the bottom of the fourth inning when senior Ryan Petraitis (Akron/ Manchester) hit a grandslam homerun, his first homer of the season, to give BW a 4-0 lead. After JCU scored three times in the top of the fifth, BW added another run in the bottom of the inning on an RBI double by Melito. In the sixth JCU scored twice to tie the game at 5-5 to set up the heroics by Melito. In the opener, Melito led BW with three hits, including the two two-baggers, and Farrell had a pair of doubles.

On the mound, junior Lawrence Hall (Elyria Senior) gained the victory in relief of fellow junior Jay Watson (New Philadelphia). Hall threw the final two-thirds of an inning and stranded a JCU runner at second base to improve to 3-0 this spring.Watson also pitched effectively in relief as he threw one and one-third innings of scoreless relief. Watson followed junior Bob Glavan (Mentor) who started and threw a solid first five innings.

In the nightcap, BW won the game when Petraitis reached base on a strikeout and a wild pitch with two outs. Pinch runner, junior Nick Slater (Wooster/ Norwayne) then reached second on an error during a botched pickoff attempt. Slater then scored the game-winning run when sophomore Matt Green (Elyria Senior) singled up the middle.

Benefitting from Green's hit was junior ace relief pitcher Aaron Krieger (Bellefontaine). Krieger earned his first win of the year against two losses and three saves as he went the final three innings. Senior Cal Snyder (East Canton) started, was relieved by freshman Rob Lewis (Margaretta) in the fourth and Lewis was relieved by Krieger in the sixth.

JCU led the nightcap 3-0 until the bottom of the sixth inning. With two outs and a runner on second, BW tied the game on a run-scoring double by Petraitis, a run-scoring triple by Green and a run-scoring single by senior leftfielder Greg Wisniewski (Brunswick). After a scoreless seventh inning, BW won it in the eighth. Offensively, Green and Petraitis ked BW with a pair of hits each.
