The Baldwin Wallace University Baseball Team is Beaten by Hiram College, 7-3 at Heritage Field in Berea

BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin Wallace University baseball team was defeated today (Tuesday, April 27) by nonleague and traditional rival Hiram College, 7-3, at Heritage Field in Berea. The loss was BW's third straight.

With its loss, the Yellow Jackets are now 16-10 overall. With its win, Hiram is 20-15 overall.

Hiram scored once in each the second, third, fourth, sixth and seventh innings to take a 5-0 lead. The Terriers extended their advantage to 7-0 in the seventh inning when junior leftfielder Derek Stanton hammered a three-run homer. The Yellow Jackets scored their three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to avoid the shutout.

In the ninth for BW sophomore designated hitter Mike Farrell (Wickliffe) walked with one out. He scored the first run when sophomore right fielder Dan Melito (Massillon Washington) doubled. Melito then scored on a single by sophomore center fielder Matt Green (Elyria Senior). The final run scored via a fielder's choice off the bat of junior catcher Pat Gallagher (Wooster Senior).

BW was stiffled offensively by Hiram junior starter Jeff Nastase, who allowed nine hits and three earned runs with nine strikeouts and just one walk before being removed after eight and one-third innings of work. Freshman pitcher Stephen Boxler tossed the final two-thirds of an inning for Hiram to help secure the win.

Offensively, senior left fielder Greg Wisniewski (Brunswick), Green and senior first baseman Ryan Petraitis (Akron/ Manchester) each had two hits for BW. Hiram pounded out 13 base hits off of four Yellow Jacket pitchers. The Terriers were led offensively by junior CF Ryan Stredney and junior catcher Geoff Nielsen with three hits each. Senior third baseman Mike Beard and freshman shortstop Jake Bailey each had a pair of base hits.

On the mound, senior Cal Snyder (East Canton) suffered the loss and dropped to 1-3 overall. He was followed to the mound by freshman J.D. Fullerton (Cuyahoga Falls) in the fourth, freshman Andrew Russell (Indianapolis, Ind./ Eastern Hancock) in the seventh and freshman Brian Karaffa (Strongsville) in the eighth inning. Karaffa pitched one and two-thirds innings of scoreless relief.

The Yellow Jackets will be back in action tomorrow (Wednesday, April 28) when they travel to Tiffin to play Ohio Athletic Conference rival Heidelberg College in a key OAC doubleheader at Pleasant Valley at 1:00 p.m. BW enters the game with a 5-6 OAC record and is in fifth place. Heidelberg is 6-4 in the OAC and in fourth place. The top four teams qualify for the season-ending OAC Playoff Series from May 13-15.
