The BW Baseball Team Beats Cleveland Cross-Town Rival
Case Western Reserve, 2-0, in Berea
BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin Wallace University baseball team defeated Greater Cleveland cross-town and nonleague rival Case Western Reserve University, 2-0, today (Thursday, April 22) at Heritage Field in Berea. It was the second time this spring that BW has beaten the Spartans. The Yellow Jackets also defeated CWRU, 14-1, on April 6 in Berea.
With its win, the Yellow Jackets are now 16-7 overall prior to hosting Ohio Athletic Conference rival Otterbein College in a key OAC doubleheader this Saturday, April 24 at 1:00 p.m. With its loss, CWRU is now 6-16 overall.
In the win versus CWRU, the Yellow Jacket offense managed just five base hits. BW scored its first run in the second inning when sophomore right fielder Dan Melito (Massillon Washington) reached on a fielders choice and advanced to third on a two-base error. He scored when senior first baseman Ryan Petraitis (Akron/ Manchester) hit a sacrifice fly. BW scored its second run in the fifth inning when sophomore center fielder Matt Green (Elyria Senior) singled to start the inning, stole second base, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a ground out by junior catcher Adam Pajakowski (South Bend, Ind./ St. Joseph's).
On the mound, freshman lefthanded pitcher Rob Lewis (Margaretta) improved to 3-0 on the season as he went a scheduled three innings, allowing just one base hit and struck out six Spartan batters, including all three he faced on the second inning. Overall, CWRU managed just three base hits and five BW hurlers stuck out a total of 10 Spartan batters.
Lewis was followed on the mound by juniors Andrew Russell (Indianapolis, Ind./ Eastern Hancock) and Nick Slater (Wooster/ Norwayne) each with two more scoreless innings of relief and freshmen J.D. Fullerton (Cuyahoga Falls) and Clayton Kynkor (Auburn Township/ Kenston) each tossed an inning of scoreless relief. Kynkor was also credited with his first career save.
Following its twinbill on Saturday versus Otterbein, the Yellow Jackets will be back in action on Tuesday, April 27 when they end their homestand with a single nine-inning game against traditional rival Hiram College at Heritage Field at 3:30 p.m.
