3-1 Sweep of Capital at Heritage Field in Berea

BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin Wallace University baseball team ended its season today (Saturday, May 8) with a 5-1 and 3-1 doubleheader sweep of Ohio Athletic Conference foe Capital University on Seniors' Day at Heritage Field in Berea.

With the wins, the Yellow Jackets end the 2004 campaign at 20-14 overall and 9-8 in the OAC. With its losses, Capital fell to 14-24 overall and 5-13 in the OAC. In addition, Yellow Jacket veteran Head Coach Bob Fisher finished the 2004 season with his 597th and 598th wins of his career. The 20-win season for BW was its fourth straight and sixth in the last seven years.

On the mound in the opener, junior lefthanded ace pitcher Dale Koler (Brunswick) earned his fifth win of the season against one loss by going the distance and tossing a five-hitter. Koler allowed just five hits and an unearned run to improve to 5-1 overall and lower his earned run average below the 2.00 level. In addition, Koler struck out 12, walked one and hit a pair of batters. For his career, Koler is now 23-10 overall and is the winninest pitcher in Yellow Jacket history. He also struck out 258 batters in 235 and two-third innings pitched.

Offensively for the Yellow Jackets, senior first baseman Ryan Petraitis (Aron/ Manchester) and sophomore center fielder Matt Green (Elyria Senior) each had a pair of base hits. Five different Yellow Jackets each drove in a run.

In the nightcap, BW got on the board first with a RBI sacrifice fly by Mike Turchan (Mayfield Heights/Mayfield) in the bottom of the third giving the Yellow Jackets a 1-0 lead. Capital would tie the game at 1-1 in the fifth, but BW answered back scoring a run of its own in the same inning on a Dan Melito (Massillon/ Washington) single to take a 2-1 advantage. BW would add another run in the sixth and secured a 3-1 victory and the two-game sweep.

On the mound, Turchan pitched all seven innings and improved to 5-2 for the season. He allowed one run on five hits and struck out three batters. Turchan ends the season with a 2.83 ERA in 54 innings pitched.

Offensively for the Yellow Jackets, Petraitis and junior shortstop Jason Albright (Camp Hill, Pa./East Pennsboro) led the team with two hits each. Albright also had a RBI in the game. Six players tied with one hit apiece.

Prior to today's game, BW honored its four senior players who are Koler, Petraitis, senior left fielder Greg Wisniewski (Brunswick) and senior righthanded pitcher Cal Snyder (East Canton).
