The Baldwin Wallace University Baseball Team Sweeps a Twinbill and Scores 47

Runs in Beating Eureka (Ill), 17-1, and Minnesota-Morris, 30-2

BEREA, OHIO - The Baldwin Wallace University baseball team scored 47 runs and pounded out 38 base hits today (March 11) in a doubleheader sweep versus Eureka (Ill.) College, 17-1, and the University of Minnesota-Morris, 30-2, in Fort Myers, Florida.  The Yellow Jackets have now won three straight games and are 6-2 on the seven-day, 10-game trip to the Sunshine State.

In the win versus Eureka, the Jackets' got excellent pitching from senior lefthanded ace Dale Koler (Brunswick) and the offense produced 14 base hits and 17 runs.  On the mound, Koler won his first game of the season as  he threw the first six innings and scatterted four hits and allowed one earned run.  He struck out a career-high 14 batters and walked just one.  Freshman Nick Vernon (Louisville/ Senior) threw a scoreless ninth inning and allowed just one hit.

Offensively, sophomore outfielder Matt Green (Elyria/ Senior) led the way with three hits, including a double, and added three runs batted-in.  In addition, sophomore second baseman Kevin Brown (Cuyahoga Falls) and junior third baseman Mike Turchan (Mayfield Heights/ Mayfield) each had two hits.  One of Turchan's hits was his team-leading fourth homerun.  In addition, freshman 2B Derek Skapes (North Olmsted ) hit his first career four-bagger.

The Yellow Jackets scored four runs in the first inning, one in the second and broke the game wide open with an eight-run third to lead, 13-0.  BW added two more runs in the top of the fourth before Eureka scored in the bottom of the frame.

In the nightcap, BW again received superb starting pitching from freshman lefthander Rob Lewis (Castalia Margaretta), who was making his first career start.  Offensively, BW pounded out 24 more hits, including a pair of homers by sophomore utility player Dan Melito (Massillon Washington).

Lewis pitched four scoreless innings and struck out three batters before giving way to junior Andrew Russell (Indianapolis, Ind./ Eastern Hancock), who pitched the final inning in the five-run 15-run ruled game.

In addition to Melito, who had three hits, four runs scored and four RBI, BW received three hits from Turchan and two each from junior shortstop Jason Albright (Camp Hills, Pa./ East Pennsboro), junior pitcher/ OF Jay Watson (New Philadelphia), sophomore first baseman Matt Wilson (Canton South), junior catcher Pat Gallagher (Wooster Senior) and freshman catcher Bob Storesina (Canton/ GlenOak).

The Yellow Jackets led from start to finish, scoring five runs in the first inning, three in the second, five in the third, five more in the fourth and 12 in the fifth to build a 30-0 advantage.

The BW baseball team will be back in action again tomorrow (March 12) when they play Thiel (Pa.) College at 9:00 a.m.  The Yellow Jackets end their spring trip to Ft. Myers on Saturday with a single, 9:00 a.m. game versus Worcester (Mass.) Polytechnic Institute.

After eight games in Florida, Turchan tops all batters with a .519 average (14 of 27) with 12 runs scored, seven doubles, a triple, four homers and 14 RBI.  He also has a 1-0 pitching mark.  As a team, BW is batting .356 with 12 homers in its first eight games.
