Yellow Jacket women’s basketball and softball teams selected to the 2003

Top 25 Team Honor Roll

BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College women’s basketball team was selected 10th in the 2002-2003 Academic Top-25 Team Honor Roll.  The Yellow Jacket softball team was also recognized for its outstanding performance in the classroom in 2003 by being selected fifth in the country by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association.  To view the complete honor roll, click here.

The women’s basketball team had a 3.419 cumulative grade point average earning 10th place in the country amongst all Division III schools.  Whiteworth College (Wash.) was ranked first with a 3.573 team grade point average.

"We are very proud of our women's basketball student-athletes who excel both off and on the court," said veteran Head Coach Cheri Harrer, an NAIA Academic All-American while as a player at the University of Findlay.
       
"Young women like Jen Swinehart '99, Jen Nance '01, Kim Luthman '01, Mandy Zolciak '01, Emily Clark '02 and Holly Koepp '03, Sarah Gordon '03, Natalie Winkelfoos '03 and Heather Eckstein '03, set the standard for our current team to match," said Harrer.  "This year's team also has some outstanding senior student-athletes, such as seniors Karissa Kusick (Chicora, Pa/Karns City/ 3.8 in chemistry) and Erika Schultz (Waterville/Anthony Wayne/ 3.8 in health and physical education) are outstanding students too.  This is a tradition of excellence that makes all of our student-athletes proud."  

"The Academic Top 25 teams exemplify the best of the best in our sport," WBCA CEO Beth Bass said.  "Not only do they get it done on the court, but they are outstanding students as well.  We congratulate all of our Academic Top 25 teams and winners in each division."

Team grade point averages are determined by the total number of quality points divided by the total number of hours attempted for the 2003-2004 academic school year.  The winners are determined following nominations submitted by WBCA-member coaches.

The Yellow Jacket softball team has a 3.486 team cumulative grade point average placing them fifth amongst all Division III schools.  Last year’s team had a total of 10 players with a grade point average of 3.5 or higher.  Of those 10 student-athletes, six will return this season, including senior pitcher Elizabeth Fries (Lancaster/Fairfield Union) who currently has a 3.957 grade point average in health promotion and busines admistration, and sophomore outfielder Lindsay Kaya (Oberlin/Firelands) who carries a 3.827 grade point average in Spanish and education. 

“We are proud of the accomplishments of our softball student-athletes,” said veteran softball coach Joe Yocabet.  “These you women should be commended for excelling in the classroom and on the softball field.”

Other returning players include junior Stephanie Camardese (Youngstown/Liberty/ 3.777 in speech communication), sophomore Joanne Tanner (Franklinville, N.Y/Ten Broeck Academy/ 3.77 in International Studies), and sophomore Nicole Loudin (Sheffield Lake/Elyria Catholic/ 3.707 in psychology).

Whitworth College (Wash.) was ranked number one in the country with a 3.560 cumulative grade point average.
