BW Women Finish First and Men Place Third at OAC North Split Meet

BEREA, OHIO – The Baldwin Wallace University men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams competed in the Ohio Athletic Conference North Split Meet tonight (Friday, January 27, 2012) on the Harrison Dillard Track in the Lou Higgins Center. The OAC North Split meet consisted of BW, Heidelberg University, John Carroll University, the University of Mount Union and Ohio Northern University

The Yellow Jacket women took first of five teams with 218 points and four athletes captured first place. The BW men finished third of five teams with 137.33 points and had had five first-place finishers.

The Yellow Jacket men were led by
, junior All-American thrower Mitch Supan (Medina/ Walsh Jesuit) as he placed first in the weight throw and shot put with a marks of 57’4.75” and 52’00”, respectively. Also in the shot put, senior Miles Moore (Gettysburg, Pa./Delone Catholic) finished second as he threw a distance of 48’10.75”.   

In addition to Supan, sophomore Brandon Eddy (Cuyahoga Heights) placed first in one event and second in two others.  In the pole vault, he finished first with a height of 15’5”. In the 55-meter hurdles, Eddy placed second with a time of 7.89 seconds and also took second in the high jump where he leaped a height of 6’2”. In addition to Eddy in the pole vault, junior Jeremy Harris (Beechwood) tied for second as he cleared a height of 13’11.25”.

In the running events for the men, junior All-Ohio Athletic Conference runner Ken Janosko (Mentor) as he placed first in the 5,000 meter run with a time of 15:22.74. In the 4x200 relay, the team of sophomores Shawn Cordes (Litchfield/ Medina Buckeye), Josiah Holt (Elyria/Grafton Midview) and Kevin Johnson (Maple Heights/Cleveland St. Ignatius), and senior Mike Smith placed first in a time of 1:32.23. In the 500-meter dash senior Daniel Sloat (Medina) placed second as he crossed the finish line in a time of 1:09.51.

The BW women were led by junior All-OAC thrower Cristina Perrine (Middleburg Heights/Midpark) as she placed first in the weight throw and shot put with distances of 54’7.25” and 42’0.5”. Placing second and fourth in the weight throw was senior Leslie Purnell (Springfield/Catholic Central) and freshman Danielle Torrence (Canton/South) recording marks of 51’0.25” and 41’3.25”, respectively. In the long jump, sophomore jumper Brittany Gerhardstein (Mentor) and junior Jessica Ballard (Cardington/Buckeye Valley) placed second and third jumping distances of 15’7.0” and 15’3.5, respectively. In the high jump, freshman Nicole Christner (Minerva) and sophomore Victoria Brown (Berlin Center/Western Reserve) tied for second as they each cleared a height of 4’7.75”.
In the running events for the women, the team of junior Kaylan Lemon (Canton/Massillon Perry), junior Lauren Nanni (Parma/Padua Franciscan), sophomore Shaquella Greeno (Lima) and junior Brittany Sterling (Lima) placed second in the 4x200 relay as they crossed the finish line in a time of 1:49.15. In the 4x400-meter relay, Lemon, sophomore Nicole Smith (Geneva), sophomore Jamie Clapacs (Willoughby Hills/Willoughby South) and sophomore Brooke Hradisky (Aurora) combined to place first in a time of 4:09.38.  Lemon also placed first in the 55-meter dash as she crossed the finish line in a time of 7.47 seconds. In the 200-meter dash, Lemon earned her second first place finish as she crossed the finish line in a time of 26.93 seconds. In the 500-meter dash Smith placed second as she finished in a time of 1:20.95. In the 800-meter dash, Hradisky placed second in a time of 2:27.13. Smith and junior Courtney Kiner (Sunbury/Ashland) placed second and third in the 55-meter hurdles, they crossed the finish line in times of 8.95 and 9.30 seconds, respectively.

The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Saturday, February 4 when both teams will travel to Wooster to compete in the Fighting Scot Invitational hosted by the College of Wooster at 12:00 noon. The next home meet is on Friday, February 10 when the teams will host the annual Mid-February Meet on the Harrison Dillard Track at 5:00 p.m.
