Baldwin Wallace Women’s Golf & Men’s Tennis Teams Play in NCAA Division III National Tournaments This Week

BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin Wallace University women’s golf and men’s tennis teams each won Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament titles and will compete this week at an NCAA Division III National Tournament. For the women’s golf team, it marks the second straight year that they have advanced to the national event. This is the first-ever trip for the men’s tennis squad after having a long tradition of success.
The women’s golf team will compete at the 2012 NCAA Division III National Championship Tournament from May 8-11 at Trine University in Angola, Indiana. This is BW’s fourth NCAA tourney appearance since 2000. Under the direction of second-year Head Coach Alyson Campbell, the Yellow Jackets finished 15th last year and have a 139-45-1 record the past two seasons with nine tournament titles, including two straight OAC crowns.
The team is led by sophomore first-team All-OAC player and OAC individual runner-up Emilee Woolf’s (Ravenna) 83.5 stroke average. She was joined as a first-team All-OAC choice by sophomore Miranda Cunningham (Dayton/ Christian), second-team picks in juniors Brooke Hamilton (St. Joseph Academy) and Rebecca Kapusta (Independence) and sophomore Rebecca Jones (Hilliard/ Darby). It marks the second straight year all five earned All-OAC accolades.
Cunningham is second in stroke average at 85.60. Kapusta, who carries a 3.5 grade point average in early childhood education, is third at 86.00. Hamilton, who carries a team-best 3.97 grade average in English and philosophy, is fourth at 87.40. Jones rounds out the starters at 90.50 strokes per round. In addition, sophomore Sarah Allred (Akron/ Green) is the alternate. She posted an 89.88 stroke average this spring in five tournaments and eight rounds.
2012 OAC Men's Tennis Champions
The men’s tennis team won its third OAC regular season title, its fourth OAC Tournament crown and will take a 28-0 record into this week’s NCAA Division III National Championship Tournament. A site and opponent will be announced on Monday, May 7 at 7:00 p.m.
The Yellow Jacket program has had amazing success under the direction of 23-year veteran Head Coach Brian Rector, who has a 413-83 career mark, including an 87-13 record and .870 winning percentage the past four seasons. BW’s 28-0 slate includes shutting out a school-record 16 opponents and outscoring them, 233-19. Only two of 28 opponents were able to score three points versus the Jackets.
Senior No.1 player Alex Trzeciak (Avon Lake) and junior No.2 player Joe Horvath (North Royalton) are the top two players. Trzeciak, second all-time with an 87-21 career mark, is 26-5 this season. He carries a 3.74 grade average in mathematics and economics and is the OAC May Scholar-Athlete of the Month. Horvath, who is tied for sixth all-time with a 72-8 career mark, is 27-2 this season. Senior transfer and No.4 player Alexandre Bordiaux (Paris, France) is a perfect 24-0 in singles at No.4 and 22-3 in doubles, including a 21-3 mark with Trzeciak at No.1.
In addition in singles play, freshman Kyle Patterson (Wooster/ Triway) is 26-3 at No.3, junior Alex Kearney (North Olmsted) is 25-4 at No.5 and junior Tyler Beaton (Bemus Point, N.Y./ Maple Grove) is 19-2 at No.6. At second doubles, Horvath and Beaton are 20-3 overall and the No.3 tandem of Patterson and senior Taylor Long (Ashland/ Senior) are 13-4. Long, a four-year doubles starter, has 83 career doubles wins to rank second all-time and Trzeciak has 82 to rank third.
Also, sophomores Brad Minrovic (Akron/ Ellet) and Josh Pecinovsky (Columbus/ Bishop Hartley) are the top reserves. Minrovic, who started last season, has a 10-3 singles slate this season and 30-12 the past two seasons. Pecinovsky is 7-1 this season and 10-4 overall. As a doubles tandem this season, Minrovic and Pecinovsky are 4-0.
