Women's 400-Meter Hurdles

Notes: Calvin College junior Rachel Boerner won her second event of the day, the 400-meter hurdles, in a stadium record time of 59.80 seconds. Boerner, who was second in the 400-hurdles last year, turned in the eighth fastest time in Division III history. MIT sophomore Jamie Simmons was second in 61.01 and Rhodes College junior Molly Buck was third in 61.69.

Talk about your transition period between your national championship run in the 400 and now the 400 hurdles: “In the 45 minutes or so between, my coach’s wife is a massage therapist. So, I went and got a massage from her. That was basically it, and I went over and rested and got out of the sun. I was already warmed up from running the 400 open, so I just went through my routine and talked with my coaches one more time. They told me that I have worked and trained very hard to do this.”
Easy to get up for this event knowing this is your specialty:“It was pretty much willpower that got me through. I mean pretty much knowing I wanted it, knowing that my body was ready for it. Around the 200 mark, I knew that I had to keep going and get down that homestretch. It was definitely difficult, but I had to focus on not missing my steps and getting my legs over that final hurdle and going as fast as I could to the finish line.”
