Women's 1,500-Meter Run

Notes: Bethel University senior Marie Borner defended her title in the 1,500-meter run with a stadium record time of 4:23.85, the fifth fastest in Division III history. Simpson junior Catie Ellingson was second at 4:27.23 and St. Thomas senior Kelly Russ was third in 4:28.55. Both Ellingson and Russ repeated as All-Americans.

Thoughts on her national title defense from a year ago: “I think winning last year gave me the confidence I needed. I have really been digging deep, and steadily improving my times all season. I knew if my legs were strong and could hold up, I knew I had it in me to go out and have a great race and a chance at a national title.”
Her race strategy headed into today: “I went out quickly, but I really had to do that. I was in lane one, which means I had to go and leave quickly and get out fast or you could get boxed in. The inside on lane one is the perfect spot for me. I just had to run smart and make sure I didn’t get passed by people and then get boxed in. You can get yourself in trouble if you get boxed in. So, I felt really good. I hit a pretty good third lap. There was a girl right beside me on the bell lap, and I knew I had some good strength left in my legs.”
