<< Back to Events Recap Page

Notes: Senior Stephen Morton of Massachusetts Institute of Technology won the long jump with a mark of 23 feet, nine inches. Morton finished ninth last year. Sophomore Kellen McCrary of Wisconsin La Crosse was second, senior Buzzy Brown of Carthage was third and sophomore Ethan Miller of Central (Iowa) was fourth.

Stephen Morton Quotes:
How did finishing just off the podium last year at the outdoor meet motivate you this year? “It made me really focus on my approach this year. I spent a lot of time over the summer and also during the indoor season working on my approach to the board. The reason I didn’t score at both the outdoor meet last year and this year’s indoor national meet was my approach. I really focused on being quicker at the end of my run and quicker off the board.”
On the changes he made between the indoor nationals and the outdoor meet: “It was definitely a mental thing that I had going on during that time as well as a technique mechanic that I needed to work on. I established that I was reaching too far at the end of my run and not paying attention to technique. At the end of the indoor season, I really worked hard on all aspects of my approach one at a time, and that hard work paid off today in a big way.”
On his plans for the rest of the weekend: “I plan on competing in the triple jump on Saturday. I hopefully can carry over this momentum and the things I have learned today and make a run at a podium finish on Saturday. I have strived for this moment all year, and hopefully I can be successful on Saturday.”
