Susquehanna Cross Country Teams Honor Fallen Friend
DALLAS, Pa. -- Susquehanna University's men's cross country team placed first, while its women placed second at the Cougar Classic, hosted by Misericordia University on Sept. 19.
Susquehanna scored 28 team points on the men's side and 67 on the women's.
SU senior Paul Thistle (Blue Bell, Pa./Wissahickon) finished second overall on the 8,000-meter men's course with a time of 27 minutes, 3 seconds. Junior Luke Trama (West Chester, Pa./West Chester East) followed Thistle by placing third at 27:10. Fellow junior Robert Steffen (New Castle, Del./Caravel Academy) crossed the line sixth with a time of 27:20, while sophomore Ian Quinlan (Eagle View, Pa./Methacton) and junior David Haklar (Coopersburg, Pa./Southern Lehigh) placed eighth and ninth with times of 27:34 and 27:35, respectively.
On the women's side, sophomore Casey Hess (Bloomsburg, Pa./Bloomsburg Area) claimed her first collegiate win, crossing the line at 19:12 on the 5,000-meter course. Junior Alycia Woodruff (West Chester, Pa./West Chester East) clocked in at 19:46, finishing fourth, while freshman Carol Giblin (Cazenovia, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) recorded a time of 20:20, good for 11th. Freshman Michelle Kraske (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) and junior Lauren Smith (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) wrapped up the Crusaders' top five. Kraske finished 27th in a time of 20:54, while Smith clocked in at 20:55 to cross the line in 28th.
Both SU's men's and women's teams honored a close friend of junior Mike Harahan (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown West) by wearing "RM" on their jerseys. Ryan McCall, a senior with the University of Tampa's men's cross country squad, was killed during a robbery attempt earlier this summer. Harahan was with McCall at the time of the incident.
