Evalyn was a member of Alpha Gamma Delta. ** JOHN JAY STILLINGER, Davis, Calf., a past B-W trustee and Alumni Merit Award recipient, died at the University Retirement Community in December, six days after his 92nd Birthday. He was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha and retired principal of James Ford Rhodes High School. He taught in the Cleveland Schools for 42 years. He is survived by his wife Mary Larick Stillinger '32 and daughters, Jan and Martha, and their families.

MARTIN LOFTUS, Pawleys Island, S.C., died in his home December 19. Martin was a self-employed optometrist and also was a football coach at Shaw High as well as a teacher and later an administrator in the East Cleveland Public Schools. Martin is survived by his sons Gary and Kevin, daughter Shelia Loftus '64, and brother George Loftus '40. Martin's wife Lella Case Loftus '36 passed away in January of 2000.

LORENE SHISLER BANTA, Winterpark, Fla., died November 21 of congestive heart failure. She retired from teaching in 1978 at Phillips Academy in Andover, Mass., where she and her late husband taught for 30 years. Lorene was a professional organist, affiliated with the American Guild of Organists, on the staff of The American Organist magazine, and past chapter president of the American Association of University Professors. ** FAITH PRIESTLEY, Ravenna, died August 15. She retired in 1974 after 34 years of teaching and three years in the Marine Corps. She halted her teaching career during WWII to serve in the Marines. She was discharged in August of 1946 as a staff sergeant with an aviation mechanic mate's diploma.

Jacob had been a secretary of two bowling leagues, director of Youngstown Mens Bowling Assoc., and exec. secretary the American Transportation Bowling Assoc. ** HELEN DICKEY, Conneaut, died February 6, 2001 at the age of 82. Helen, a member of the Beta Sigma Omicron sorority, was a retired music teacher. ** WILLIAM HOGG, Sebring, passed away Dec. 6 at Crandall Medical Center. Rev. Hogg was a former pastor of the Brecksville United Methodist Church and several other congregations. A veteran of WWII, he was a chaplain at the D-Day invasion. He received the Purple Heart and Silver Star. Bill received an Honorary Doctor of Divinity Degree from B-W in 1972. IN 1990 he was elected a Life Member of the Mount Union College Board of Trustees. Bill is survived by 3 children, James Hogg, Elizabeth Hogg '71, and Nancy Lohr, and two grandchildren.

BURKE FREES, Clearwater, Fla., died October 12 at Morton Plant Hospital. A pilot for Northwest Airlines for more than 30 years, he was in the Air Transport command during WWII. He established Highland Pines Nursing Manor and Highland Terrace Retirement Center, Clearwater. Burke was a member of Alpha Tau Omega, Heritage United Methodist Church, Eagle Scouts, Florida Nursing Home Association, and Airline Pilots Association. He is survived by his wife Lois and two sons. ** WILLIAM NAEGELE, Albuquerque, N.M., died December 10 at the age of 83 after a lengthy illness. He was a member of Alpha Sigma Phi, a WWII combat veteran, printer and newspaper editor. Bill was a Rotarian for more than 40 years and was a docent for the National Atomic Museum in Albuquerque, a member of the Albuquerque Mineral Club and the Association of the United States Army. HARVEY ALFORD, Amherst, died January 22 following a brief illness. He retired in 1982 as senior research associate with Standard Oil Co., where he was the author of more than 40 U.S. patents and a dozen technical papers. He was a charter member of Sohio's Inventor's Hall of Fame. Survivors include his daughter Mary and son Robert. ** ROBERT CARVER, Castalia, passed away March 12, 2001. Robert was a member of Phi Kappa Tau while at B-W and was an osteopathic physician. He built a Jodel D9 airplane, which he flew to Wisconsin. He has many other planes which he landed on the strip next to his home and office. He is survived by his wife Martha and daughters Sarah and Paula. ** W.P. “PAUL” KILWAY, Tallmadge, died unexpectedly December 4. He was a member of Alpha Tau Omega and a physician at Health Pavilion North. Paul is survived by his wife Doris and four children. ** JULIA GECELOVSKY KNAPP, Elyria, passed away October 8. Julia was a member of Phi Mu sorority and a retired teacher. ** LESTER ROIG, Peoria, Ariz., died February 1 at the age of 78 after a brief battle with cancer. Les was a member of Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity and was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge and Bronze Star for efforts in the Battle of the Bulge. He was named treasurer of the C&O – B&O Railroads in 1965. In 1973 Les became treasurer of CSX Corp., until he retired in 1984. Les is survived by his wife Mildred Lent Roig '47, sons Randy and Reed, and daughter Wendy.

Troy had been a coach, teacher, principal, and superintendent from 1947 to 1971. He retired from Industrial Steel Inc. in Youngstown in 1989 as vice president. Survivors include sons Brock and Kevin.

DONALD BAEDER, Northborough, Mass., former B-W Trustee, passed away January 17. Don began his career at Exxon and eventually became VP of Corporate and Government research. In 1974, he joined Occidental Petroleum where he was Executive VP of Research with responsibility for Environmental and Special Projects, including “Love Canal.” After retiring he co-founded Baeder Neruda Interests, Inc., an investment and development company. He also served as chairman of Regency Group. Don is survived by his wife Barbara Ayres Baeder '50, sons Scott, David, Richard, and James, daughter Ellen, and his brother Robert Peterson '51. ** WILLIAM STANLEY, Cleveland, passed away January 30. HAROLD BRUCE BENDING, Bel Air, Md., died January 1 of an illness related to Parkinson's disease. He graduated from B-W at the age of 19. His intelligence and eccentric personality were highlighted when he read a set of World Book Encyclopedias cover to cover twice in his youth. Bruce retired in 1989 as a senior development engineer for Armco Steel Corp. Soon after he co-founded O.F. Industries. Bruce bred trout in his backyard and also loved planting trees and other vegetation. He is survived by his wife Marilyn Patchen Bending '54, daughters Kathy Woodward and Gail Bending. ** JOHN MARTY, Mission Hills, Calif., passed away on August 15, following hip surgery. Before entering B-W, John served with the fifth Armored Division WWII Battle of the Bulge. John was a retired teacher and coach at Fullerton Union High School. He had also taught and coached at Johnstown and Mr. Gilead, Ohio for four years. He is survived by his wife Dorothea and five children. ** ROBERT MCELRATH, Greenville, Tenn., died January 19. Robert had been a professor at East Tennessee State University. ** EDWIN MINAR, Munroe Falls, passed away October 11. Edwin was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon and served in the U.S. Army from 1945 to 1947. Edwin was working for First Security Title in Akron and belonged to Toastmasters, Home Builders Inc., and the Akron Area Board of Realtors. DR. JOSEPH ALBRECHT, Elyria, died February 24 at his home at the Elyria United Methodist Village. Joesph is a honorary alumnus and a long time supporter of B-W, particularly in music. Joseph and his wife, Sophie Soeffker Albrecht '45, established the Sophie Albrecht Scholarship for music students. Joseph was a teacher, a CPA and, later, a psychotherapist. He became a minister and served in many churches, including 11 years both in Springfield, Ill. and Lakewood. He was a member of the national committee that helped join three separate denominations, Methodist Episcopal, Evangelical United Brethren and Methodist Protestant into the United Methodist Church. After retiring in 1969, he was an interim pastor for the United Church of Christ denomination. He was interim pastor at Pilgrim Church of Cleveland until retiring in 1990. Survivors include his wife Sophie Soeffker Albrecht '45, children Lee Albrecht, Gregory Herzberger, Julie Behboudi and Debbie Somerville, and their families. ** WILMA ANN COLEMAN, Brantford, ON, Canada, husband of Elton A. Coleman '48 FS. Best friend and wife of 47 years passed away November 12, 2001. ** ELAINE POPOVICH CROSSEN, Middleburg Hts., passed away February 17 at the age of 71. Elaine had worked in Food Service at B-W. She is survived by nine children and their families. ** JAMES GARDNER, Parma, retired B-W Business Manager, passed away at the age of 79, December 26 in his home. He has been diagnosed with liver cancer in November. James retired after 24 years with B-W. James had written the first set of personnel rules. He is survived by his wife Sandra and step-children Mark Dunkel and Sharon Greenawalft. ** JOHN KNIGHT, Tempe, Ariz., died July 21 at Desert Samaritan Hospital at the age of 85. Dr. Knight was B-W's fourth president from 1950-1956. He is survived by his wife Alice, and two daughters Merrie Knight Crawford and Wendy Knight Baker '76. ** SUSAN RIEMENSCHNEIDER, Akron, died March 6 at the ago of 54. Great granddaughter of Karl Riemenschneider, former president of German Wallace College, granddaughter of Albert Riemenschneider, first director of the Conservatory, she was born with Down Syndrome. Despite doctors' dour predictions, she went on to complete her education and graduated from Akron Buchtel High School. She collaborated on a book, Down Syndrome Pioneer and worked at Our Lady of Elms Catholic School. She also was a trustee at the Center for Mental Retardation of Cuyahoga County and had lectured to medical students at Northeast Ohio College of Medicine, Case Western Reserve and Ohio State University. In recent years she became the caregiver for her parents who passed away in 1993 and 1999. She is survived by brothers Dr. Thomas A. Riemenschneider '57, and his wife Judy; John K. Riemenschneider '61, and his wife Nancy; nieces Karen Schindler '93 (MAEd.), Laura Hancock '89, Betsy Neubeck and Kara Ekstrom; nephews Joseph '92 and James and his wife Anna; and four great nieces and nephews.
