Adult Degree Completion Program

Genia Friscone

Degree/Major:  Bachelor of Arts in Marketing with a minor in Public Relations, May 2008

Current position: Cleveland Browns/Season Ticket Account Rep.  I would like to move towards the Public Relations department with the Browns while pursuing my MBA.

Why did you choose to attend the adult degree completion program at B-W?
B-W’s reputation was what attracted me to the college.  Not only was it close to home, but I knew that the money and time invested would pay off one day.  B-W’s generous transfer scholarship made my decision to attend the college even easier.  I transferred 52 hours from Cuyahoga Community College.

How did B-W support or prepare you in attaining your goals?
I thought Marketing was my only love until I took my first course in public relations.   At that point I realized how interested I was in PR.  I added a minor in PR to my Marketing degree and  worked closely with professors, especially Sean Gilmore.  When I graduated, I had developed a portfolio that gives me a major advantage over my competition in the job market.

B-W has given me the skills I need to attain my goals by applying everything to real-life situations.  Class presentations gave me the confidence I needed to face tough situations and impress employers.  I had wonderful experiences with all my professors.  I cannot believe how much time these professors invest in their students.  They will go out of their way to accommodate you, as well as teach critical concepts that can be applied to life.

What was your experience with different course formats
Accelerated mimimesters and immersions are great for the working student.  There is no way I would have been able to take 18 credit hours per semester without splitting it up with 8-week (half semester) minimester courses.  Over the summer, I was able to get 8 credit hours and 3 classes out of the way by taking immersions.  Even though these courses are intensive, the professors do a great job to ensure your succeed in each class.

Other information you would like to share including any advice for new students?  Get involved!  Starting college or transferring to a new school can be very intimidating.  Join a club or become part of a sorority/fraternity.   I haven’t met a single person I didn’t like at Baldwin-Wallace.  You will have no problems making friends or fitting in.   My involvement with the Public Relations Club has been informative as well as fun.  The hands-on experience takes education to a whole new level has allowed me to make many great friends and create a positive social network.
