Learning and Support Services
B-W’s small community allows us to provide every student with an extensive support network for both academic and personal pursuits. At every turn, students have access to resources that help them achieve academic excellence and become contributing, compassionate citizens. Our learning and support services include the following.
The Learning Center
The Learning Center offers a variety of programs and classes that help students improve their academic performance. The center provides free tutoring, a drop-in mathematics lab, and classes in study skills, test-taking, and time management.
Writing Lab
In the Writing Lab, professional tutors help students with every step in the writing process, from developing a thesis to formatting a list of works cited. The lab also has a library of writing reference books and files of helpful handouts.
Career Services
Career Services provides programming and resources to facilitate the transition from college to career, such as career and internship fairs, resume and cover letter writing workshops, interview coaching, guidance in choosing a major, and graduate and professional school workshops.
Multicultural Student Support Services (MSSS)
MSSS organizes educational and social programming that helps underrepresented students thrive both academically and socially. In addition, MSSS works with other offices and organizations on campus to further the cause of social change through diversity and leadership training.
Single Parents Reaching Out For Unassisted Tomorrows (SPROUT)
SPROUT is a comprehensive residential program for single parents ages 18–23 and their children. SPROUT helps young parents earn college degrees by providing, among other things, campus housing and nearby day care.
Center for Alcohol and Related Issues Education (CARE)
The aim of CARE is to create an environment in which students can take control of their personal growth, development, and well-being.
Challenging Athletes’ Minds for Personal Success (CHAMPS)
CHAMPS is an NCAA program with 424 member colleges and universities. B-W is one of 76 Division III members. The program works to maintain intercollegiate athletics as an important part of the college educational program and to focus on the student-athlete as an integral part of the student body.
Health Services
The Health Services Clinic care includes evaluation and treatment of illnesses and injuries; treatment for acne, warts and burns; removal of sutures; certain lab tests; medical referrals; and loan of medical equipment such as crutches, heating pads and vaporizers. A nurse practitioner provides the following additional services by appointment: physicals, gynecological and contraceptive services, and evaluation and treatment of sexually transmitted diseases. Also available are pregnancy testing and counseling, immunizations, allergy injections and health/wellness literature.
Counseling Services
You don't have to be sick to get better. If you come to see us when your problem is relatively small, we usually can be helpful much more quickly and efficiently. The longer you wait, the bigger the problem gets, and the more work it is (usually) to figure out. We are mental health professionals. You are the expert on you. Together we collaborate as a team to identify sources of distress, confused beliefs, unproductive pattern of behaviors, and unhelpful thoughts. We will also identify personal strengths and resources to develop new life strategies, resources, and connections to help you live a more satisfying life.
