Questions and answers
Why did you choose to teach at BW?
I appreciate the intellectual rigor that the liberal arts tradition offers to the young artist. The breadth of knowledge obtained in the core curriculum often informs the artistic decisions our students make about their own work with regards to form, content and concept.
What characteristics distinguish BW from other colleges/universities?
There is a rich and meaningful environment in which to develop here. Within the Art Department, we have been able to maintain a strong sense of community while preparing students for acceptance into some of the top graduate programs in the country.
How do you mentor students?
By getting to know them as individuals through conversations in the studios. Discussions occur on just about every topic: from the hopes and fears of life, to pop culture, to career goals. These life-affirming (and sometimes life-altering) conversations are one of the great advantages of a smaller college and department like ours. We get to know our students and they get to know us.
What do students like best about your class?
That I push them to become their personal best while maintaining a sense of humor about it all. To make art is to be involved in the best possible combination of work and play I know of.
If you weren't teaching what would you be doing?
Painting- all day, every day. Sundays and evening hours would be reserved for family, reading, gardening and bonsai formation.
