Music Theory Classes are Nothing to Scoff At

As a vocal performance minor in the conservatory I am required to take two semesters of Tonal Harmony and Solfege/Eurhythmics. These are only two credit classes and may seem like they should be really easy, but don’t be deceived my friends. Music theory is tough stuff. Last week we were working on major and minor scales and key signatures. We were also working on interval recognition. This week we were tested on rhythms, simple key signatures, and compound key signatures. Even though the second chapter was shorter I think it was harder.

It takes time, practice, and dedication to even come close to getting an A. Everything in Harmony class is very mathematical. There is homework every night and a quiz just about every week (sometimes twice a week). The conservatory at BW is intense. There is a lot to learn and a lot expected of you. Weather you’re a music major or minor you are expected to work your very hardest in your music classes. I am not trying to scare anyone away from taking these classes, I just want people to know that they are not as easy as they seem
