The week of spring break for me was spent with the final three shows of Carrie: The Musical, then home for a day on Monday, then on the Greyhound to NYC on Tuesday to prepare for the Strawhat auditions at Pace University at the end of the week. Strawhats are what we sophomores have been preparing for in our workshop class for quite some time. It's a big unified type audition where about 25 summer stock theaters from all around the nation come to cast and recruit talent for their summer seasons. Some offer a small stipend, some decent paychecks or EMC points, and some are there representing casting companies for theme parks and such. We have an initial audition for all of the theaters with is followed by a day full of callbacks for individual theatre companies or shows. I was lucky enough to be called back for 11 different theaters, so I had to plan my time accordingly and had to be free for a 6:00 dance call.
The day was nuts I had callbacks all the way up until I danced at 6 when my initial audition was at 12:30! Craziness but an awesome ride I'm glad I took. I learned to be nothing but myself and if I'm not who someone wants to work with, there's nothing I can do about it other than give 110 percent of what I have for every callback. It was a blast and I even got to stay in the city an extra day for a callback for a theatre company in Maine that was held in Manhattan. That led me to see the third preview of "Heathers: The Musical", Off-Broadway, which is based off of the cult film with Winnona Ryder from the 80's. AKA The original "Mean Girls." Heathers was juicy and hysterical and I'm so glad I saw it at New World Stages before it takes off into something great. All in all I feel great about my auditions and now it's just to let the cards fall where they may!
