I have found in my life that we often take things for granted, and there is no more quote as true as “you only want something until you have it.” I guess that could be true with some rearrangement as well, maybe something like “you don’t know what you have until it’s gone.” Often that’s referenced in relationships between people, but here, I’m referencing these quotes to my one true love: Soccer.
The relationship I have with the sport has taken an entirely new life this year. As a junior and one of the staples in the team I realized a new found love of the game. From going to the locker room before a practice, to getting taped in the training room, to warm ups before games, and even playing deep into the fall where 6:00am practices are miserable and incredible all at once. To see the field so early, to be with your friends on the pitch and to simply play is a one of a kind feeling. I have realized that without soccer I have no real motivation, no drive, and no sense of purpose between the hours of 3:00pm and 8:00pm. I have too much time on my hands and not enough to do! Naturally I’ve caught up on school work, dabbled in some classic readings, and updated my iPod, but it’s only been a week. I’ve begun working out as a substitute for a good sweat every day but it just isn’t the same. So I’m leaving you with a message: Appreciate the things you love, and never take them for granted. I believe I took this season for granted a bit, and realizing I have one more year of competitive soccer left puts a lifetime’s worth of work into perspective. I’ve begun preparations for next season already because I’m so anxious, because I miss it, and because I need the game. If there’s something in your life you need, make sure to never let that desire go…love your game!
