Baldwin-Wallace College offers a variety of non-degree graduate professional development workshops designed to meet the demands of today's educators. Professional development workshops earn graduate, professional development credit through Baldwin-Wallace College. They do not count toward the master's degree.
Unless otherwise indicated, all classes are offered at Baldwin-Wallace College in Berea, Ohio.
Highly Qualified Teacher Training for Intervention Specialists:
These classes are for intervention specialists who are seeking Highly Qualified Teacher (HQT) status in one or more of the content areas below. You will receive a certificate verifying successful completion and 3 hours of graduate, professional development credit per course through Baldwin-Wallace College. They do not count toward the master's degree at Baldwin-Wallace College.

EDU 565.HQ1 Mathematics for Intervention Specialists HQT Training Instructor: G. Christie, Assistant Professor, Division of Education Dr. Gary Christie is the full-time methods teacher in middle childhood mathematics at B-W. The workshop is 45 clock hours and all work will be completed within the classroom. The content covers 1st through 9th grade mathematics within a hands-on, developmental atmosphere through use of manipulatives to seek the meaning behind procedures commonly taught in the traditional mathematics classroom. Emphasis on cooperative learning. No textbook. (Note: this class can not be taken concurrently with HQT Science or HQT Writing/Reading due to required clock hours in the classroom).

EDU 565.HQ2 Writing/Reading for Intervention Specialists HQT Training Instructor: Robert Bolek, Lecturer, Division of Education Participants will explore the elements of literature, poetry, grammar, genres of literature and types of writing appropriate for grades 7-12. A young adult novel will be read. No textbook. Lab fee payable to the instructor on the first day of class: $6. (Note: this class can not be taken concurrently with HQT Math or HQT Science due to required clock hours in the classroom). |

EDU 565.HQ3 Science for Intervention Specialists HQT Training Instructor: Suzanne Rusnak, Lecturer, Division of Education Ohio's academic content standards will be used as the basis for material presented in this course designed for those instructing grades 6 - 10. Topics to be covered include scientific inquiry, biologic evolution, basic genetics, cell structure, and more. A combination of lectures, class discussions, demonstrations, and hands on activities will be used to cover the material. No textbook. Lab fee $10. (Note: this class can not be taken concurrently with HQT Math or HQT Writing/Reading due to required clock hours in the classroom).

EDU 565.HQ4 Social Studies for Intervention Specialists HQT Training: 20th Century World History Instructor: T. Sutton, Associate Professor of Political Science An overview of 20th century world history, this workshop focuses on major events and trends that shaped the period. Explore cultural developments such as music, popular trends, visual arts, literature and film as vehicles for getting your students interested in world history. No textbook. $5.00 fee for CD-ROM.

EDU 565.PD1 Differentiation and the 3 M's Instructor: B. Sposet, Associate Professor and Middle Childhood Coordinator, Division of Education Do you have students with multiple abilities? Multiple cultures? Do they speak multiple languages other than English? If so, differentiation is the answer to meeting the needs of these students. Participants will be introduced to the concept of tiered assignments as well as strategies to use with ESL students in the regular education classroom. Three field trips included. Lunch extra.

EDU 565.PD2 The Three R's: Reading, (W)Riting and Rubrics Instructor: B. Sposet, Associate Professor and Middle Childhood Coordinator, Division of Education This workshop will discuss the purpose of rubrics, how to create them and use them in the grading process. Participants will work in groups to develop a thematic unit, an assessment and accompanying rubric after viewing a video about teaching. Participants will also learn how to utilize www.rubistard.org in the computer lab. Come and get ready for the new school year!

EDU 565.PD3 Multi-Modalities in the Language Arts Grades 5-9 Instructor: Robert Bolek, Lecturer, Division of Education This course will emphasize effective classroom teaching for any teacher, any level. Traits of effective teaching and effective learners will be introduced and discussed. The ability to teach through planning lessons that include all modalities will be demonstrated. Participants in the course will create their own lessons that include all modalities that are useful and appropriate for their particular teaching situation. Those taking the course will experience several activities and strategies that incorporate modalities in a classroom setting. Active and hands-on, this class will lead participants to more effective teaching.

EDU 565.PD4 The Holocaust: An Intensive One-Week Study This workshop will focus on events shaping Europe and especially Germany in the 20th century. It will take you from Emperor Wilhelm II, World War I, the rise of Hitler, the descent into Hell, and to the new democratic Germany.

EDU 565.PD5 Environmental Science for Educators: Promoting Watershed Stewardship (in cooperation with TriC East) This course will prepare educators to design and implement a project promoting stewardship in a local watershed. The Euclid Creek Watershed will be used as a model to explore the natural history of watersheds and the impacts of human activities. Contact Herbert Mausser at 216-987-2336 for more information.

EDU 565.PD6 Crisis Management for Teaching Professionals This class is appropriate for teachers, paraprofessionals, social workers and other school professionals. The training program provides positive, practical and proven methods and strategies for managing students in crisis situations. The program focuses on identifying developing crises, ability to use intervention techniques and de-escalating crises, with emphasis designed to build skills in crisis intervention. Available for graduate or undergraduate credit depending upon the student's academic credentials. |

Finelli, Division of Education This class is designed for classroom teachers who want to explore and utilize practical and efficient ways to integrate technology into instruction and learning. Obtain and apply skills and knowledge of a variety of educational software and enhance professional productivity. EDU 565.PD8 Inquiry-Based Active-Learning Techniques for Mathematics Instruction Instructor: G. Christie, Assistant Professor, Division of Education Dr. Gary Christie is the full-time methods teacher in childhood mathematics at B-W. Participants will experience math in a hands-on, inquiry-based/problem-solving format. The course will emphasize teaching from a conceptual base rather than the more typical, less successful abstract approach. Participants will work in groups on specific lessons with math content of their choosing, using active-learning techniques that can be applied to their own classrooms. Focus will be on grades 2-5 but the course is very appropriate for kindergarten, first and sixth grade teachers as well. Oberlin and Clearview teachers will have priority enrollment in this class, other teachers welcome on a space available basis.
