What courses are required for different teaching areas?
Curriculum Sheets are available online, or you can contact the B-W Admission Office at 440-826-8025 to talk with an admission counselor. If you are currently enrolled at B-W, contact the Education Division for more information.
What's the difference between "License+Masters" and "Licensure Only"?
Both programs are for college graduates who wish to earn an initial teaching license (i.e., you are not licensed to teach in Ohio). At B-W, we give you a choice of programs, depending on your preparation and goals.
The Licensure Only Program is a post-baccalaureate program consisting of undergraduate courses leading to State of Ohio teacher licensure in Early Childhood, Middle Childhood, Adolescent/Young Adult, Multi-Age or Mild/Moderate Educational Needs. Licensure Only has fewer course requirements than License+Master's. With the Licensure Only Program, students do not complete another bachelor or master's degree from Baldwin-Wallace College. When an applicant already has a master's degree, wants to take fewer courses, or does not meet admission requirements for the License+Master's Program, they choose Licensure Only.
The License+Master's Program is part of the Master of Arts in Education Program for students seeking an initial teaching license. This program combines graduate and undergraduate courses leading to State of Ohio teaching requirements in an approved area (Early Childhood, Middle Childhood, Adolescent/Young Adult, Multi-Age or Mild/Moderate Educational Needs). In addition to their teaching area, students complete a graduate specialization in one of the following: Reading, Mild/Moderate Educational Needs, or Educational Technology. The graduate specialization becomes an additional teaching endorsement or license.
Can I take any education courses in the Evening/Weekend Program?
Yes, but you can't complete your entire teaching license that way. B-W offers a number of education courses in the Evening/Weekend Program for adults attending on a part-time basis. While much of your program can be completed as a part-time Evening and Weekend student, you will need to at least two or three semesters in day classes (the professional methods classes and student teaching) and all field experiences must be completed during the day.
How long will it take me to earn an initial teaching license?
The length of time varies depending on what you want to teach and how much coursework applies from your previous college work. Most teaching areas require 70-100 credit hours of coursework in specific subject areas, so it often takes three years to complete teacher licensure requirements, even if you already have a bachelor's degree. The good news is many of the courses are available evenings and Saturdays so you can continue to work while attending part-time, and financial aid is available to help with tuition costs.
Can I get a teaching license in Elementary Education?
In September 2002, the State of Ohio changed teacher licensure requirements so that Elementary Education (Kindergarten or 1 through 8) is no longer available to new teachers seeking a first-time license. Now teachers wishing to work with younger grades are licensed in Early Childhood (PreK through Grade 3) or Middle Childhood (4 - 9). Middle Childhood requires two teaching subject areas from Language Arts, Math, Science and Social Studies.
How do I renew an expired teaching certificate or license?
A teaching certificate or license that has been lapsed for less than five years requires 9 semester credits from an approved teacher education institution like Baldwin-Wallace College.
If a certificate or license has been lapsed for five years or more, renewal is a more extensive process -- 12 semester credits from an approved teacher education institution are required. In addition, the recommendation of the Dean or Chair of Teacher Education Program is required on the renewal application.
Contact the Office of Admission at evening@bw.edu or by calling 440-826-8025 for more information on courses to take for renewing teaching credentials, and to discuss the application process.
Can licensed teachers add a new area of licensure or an endorsement to an existing license?
Yes, licensed teachers can add a license or an endorsement to an existing license, or update courses required by B-W to meet state standards. At the graduate level, teachers can add a license in School Leadership, Mild/Moderate Intervention Specialist, and endorsements in Education Technology or Reading can be obtained at the graduate level.
Can teachers add teaching areas or update an existing license to meet state standards?
Updates in subject areas are taken at the undergraduate level. Curriculum sheets are available on line. To see requirements for updating a license click on Licensure Only and then the subject area.
