By now, you pretty much know the ropes. You’ve adjusted to college life. Now that you have all the basics down pat (that cafeteria food’s not all that bad!), maybe it’s time to take the next step. Expand your involvement. Continue to explore. Because the more you learn about the world around you, the more you’ll learn about you.

Actions

Make a contribution

Look for an organizational connection that allows you to give as well as get. You have a unique voice to add to any project.

Approve this message

Get a feel for the vision of student government. Pay attention to (or write for) The Exponent to see where your elected leaders are heading. Think about whether running for office would be right for you.

Reach out

Outreach opportunities can take as little as a few hours. Check out the weekly community outreach opportunities and stop by to meet the folks at the Office of Community Outreach.

Create a network

Try to meet at least one new person each week. You’re going to live and work in a diverse world, so be sure to get to know people that are different from you.

Be a blank slate

Take a chance. Go to an event on a subject that you know absolutely nothing about. Keep an open mind, and identify at least two things that you learned.

Document your experiences

Take the time to keep track of yourself. Use your E-Portfolio to build your profile and document your activity and growth as you shape your collegiate and professional plans.

Start a conversation

Discuss the things you’re learning in your classes with your floormates and friends. Outside perspectives can be very helpful in enriching your in-class discussions.

Plan ahead

Thinking about an internship? Want to study abroad your junior or senior year? Remember that these activities require up to a full year of advance planning. Talk to your advisor and figure out what’s right for you.
