This masterpiece of the Irish theater by Bryan Friel first debuted in 1981 as a historical drama about the suppression of Irish culture through centuries of English Colonization. The play is set in a small Irish-speaking school in Northern Ireland in 1833 when British soldiers were surveying the land and giving new Anglican names to every town and stream, and new schools were being established that prohibited the use of the Irish, or Gaelic, language. This touching drama centers on an aging schoolmaster, his devoted students, and the betrayal of an expatriate son who returns as the translator for the army officers. The worlds collide with a remarkable love story that transcends the barriers of language, but must ultimately bring terrible, violent consequences. Click link to view THE FALSETTO TRILOGY page.
