Talk about a social, political, or economic issue, and almost everyone has an idea on how to solve it. Some are based on pure speculation, some are opinions, and some are very academic in nature. The typical commonality between all of these diverse types of solutions is that the onus is on someone else or some other group to take action and thereby, one day in the undetermined future, magically make the problem go away. The wait could be very long, particularly as we realize that the interests of the many (the disassociated masses) are not necessarily the interests of the few (powerful elites). And, it could be too late. The best time to solve any social issue is -- you guessed it -- now!
The question is not what others are going to do about the problem or issue; it is what we can do about it ourselves -- at a personal level. The impact of personal social action may not be huge; it may not even have meaning and significance for all. But it will have a huge, meaningful and significant at the personal, individual level.
These pages are born out of the desire
- to engage in Sociological Imagination, where we see the social issues at a very personal level and vice versa
- to apply knowledge learned in the classrooms in the "real" world
- to make our personal contribution to our community, our society and our world
- to create a change in the way we conduct ourselves
- to change ourselves for the better
This is a student-faculty collaborative effort, managed by the Department of Sociology at Baldwin-Wallace College, where social issues are highlighted and prescriptive solutions are offered, but only in terms of what individual people are able to do. These solutions can certainly shape up into a collective effort, but the focus is more on what the individual does to create individual impact when dealing with social issues. That way, social change is brought about in very clearly noticeable ways. That is empowerment of the common citizen in a democracy. That's Personalized Social Action!
