We welcome you to take a look at the ECCAO research members that may come into your home, on our Meet our Observers page. Here you will be able to meet the students who are trained and qualified by Dr. Michael Dwyer of Baldwin-Wallace College. They are prepared to answer any questions that you might have about ECCAO.
During a typical in-home observation, you can expect the following:
- ECCAO research assistants will observe you and your child interacting in the home environment for a few minutes.
- Then, you, the parent or guardian, and your child will be shown approximately 12 short (30 seconds) video scenarios. The video will be played on a laptop that the observer will bring to your home. This video has short 30 second scenes of parent and children interactions. After these scenes the observer will ask your child about what they saw and thought was happening. In addition to the parent-child interaction clips, there will be fun cartoons between the scenes that will hopefully keep your child entertained throughout this time. Currently, we are still developing this video with children who are five to six years old at the Children and Family Life Center, a local Berea child day care. These children have been very receptive of the video and get really excited to watch the familiar cartoon clips of movies such as Lilo & Stitch or Finding Nemo.
- Finally, we ask the parents to take a survey known as the SSRS or Social Skills Rating System-Parent Version. This survey can be completed at the parent’s leisure. It is a survey designed to help us assess how the child acts in his or her home, and to get a better idea of mannerisms and behaviors.
Your choosing to take part in this program will allow us to see if the curriculum changes in the school, as well as the training of the teachers/staff are making a positive impact on your child’s life. In the end, we hope to see if there are any adjustments needed in the program. If you are interested, please contact us.
Teachers will send packets home with the children which will include descriptions of the home visits and permission slips which are needed for us to proceed with observations.
