Jaclyn Biada

Last update: "After graduating, I became the Laboratory Director of the B-W Neuroscience Lab and was thrilled to get the opportunity to work with Dr. Mickley and all of the amazing labbies another year! After that, I moved to Palo Alto, CA, to be with my boyfriend (we met at B-W in the Biochemistry lab!) while he finishes his Ph.D. at Stanford. I am currently working as a Research Associate for the Palo Alto Institute for Research and Education at the V.A. Hospital of Palo Alto. Being the first job I have had in research outside of the B-W lab, I have realized how incredibly much the lab prepared me for my future. I encourage all current members to take advantage of every opportunity available to you in the lab, you will really learn valuable skills and future employers will be so impressed! As for my favorite memory, I cannot just pick one! The B-W Neuroscience Lab is such an incredible place. I am so grateful to be a part of it!"

Sam Crish, Ph.D. and Christine Dengler-Crish

Sam_and_Christine_@_Reception2.jpg

Sam earned his B.S. in Biology from B-W in 1997 and completed a Biological Sciences Ph.D. program at the University of Illinois at Chicago.  Christine earned her B.A. in Psychology from B-W and is in a Ph.D. program in Biopsychology at Vanderbelt University.  Although both are B-W Neuroscience Laboratory alums, Sam and Christine worked in the lab at different times and did not actually meet until Dr. Mickley's annual "Friends of Mickley" dinner at the Society for Neuroscience meeting.  The two wed on July 13, 2002.

Christine: "After graduating from BW, I worked as lab director of the BW Neuroscience and Animal Learning labs before going on to graduate school in Chicago. At the University of Illinois at Chicago, I received a Master's degree in Psychology/Behavioral Neuroscience. Currently, I am in Nashville TN at Vanderbilt University and I am about to finish my doctoral degree in Neuroscience. My current research involves studying how puberty and reproduction influence bone growth in female naked mole-rats. The BW neuroscience lab gave me an amazing head-start on my future. I learned so many basic and advanced small-animal surgical and experimental skills that I surpassed many of my colleagues in graduate school. Being lab director for a year also allowed me to gain important interpersonal and leadership skills. This is something many prominent neuroscientists dont even have! There are two very important things I took away from the neuroscience lab. First is an appreciation for good experimental design. I consider my precision in planning well-crafted experiments one of my greatest assets. The second thing I learned was from Dr. Andy Mickley himself and this is to have a healthy balance in my responsibilities, family, and career. He taught me to enjoy life as well as love my work. My favorite lab memory is attending my first SFN conference in Miami Beach and meeting my husband Sam Crish. We had our first child, Clive Xavier Crish on September 30, 2006."

Sam: "After B-W I got my Ph.D. in Neurobiology at the University of Illinois at Chicago. I then went to Vanderbilt University and worked on brain evolution in Ken Catania's lab. Currently, I am doing another postdoc in the Calkins lab, also at Vanderbilt, studying axonal degeneration and transport deficits in glaucoma. Also, Christine (my wife - also a Mickley alum) had out first baby, Clive Xavier Crish, on Sept. 30, 2006. He'll be attending his first Society for Neuroscience meeting this fall."

Carrie Crouse,

Hometown: Independence, OH

Last Update: Carrie attended veterinary school at Ohio State University.

Jennifer Deck

Last Update:  Jennifer earned her B.S. in biology from B-W in 2000.  She attended Case Western Reserve University Graduate School and is working full time in the Cardiovascular Physiology Laboratory.  She also works on the weekends in the ER and a veterinary clinic. Jenn was recently accepted to OSU School of Veterinary Medicine and will be starting school in the fall of 2007.  She is currently doing laboratory work attempting to characterize the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor subunits of the sympathetic nervous system.  Knowing the subunits of the nAchR of the parasympathetic system, her lab will compare the two and their involvement in the production of heart failure.  She is also preparing her first manuscript and hopes to be published.

Anthony DiSorbo

Hometown: Strongsville, OH

Major graduated with: Psychology and Neuroscience majors. English minor.

Other interests or hobbies: Music, guitar, tennis, painting, and writing

Plans after graduation: I'm currently enrolled in a Ph.D program at Temple U. (Ph.D in Psychology; Brain, Behavior and Cognition cluster). I plan to do cognitive neuroscience research for a career.

First experience at the lab: My first experience was at the end of my freshman year. We were conducting an experiment with fetal rats, and I was allowed to participate, holding the fetal rats and recording orofacial responses to different taste stimuli. I was impressed with the amount of hands on training I was offered, even as someone new to the lab.

Favorite lab memory: Traveling with the lab to the Society for Neuroscience conference to present research.  We were able to fit in some time to do some sight seeing. It was a very fun experience.

How has the lab helped you in obtaining your long-term goals: I didn't know much about the field of neuroscience before attending B-W. After strating work in the lab, I eventually declared neuroscience as a second major. The lab has influenced my career greatly.  I received the experience needed to be competitive for applying to graduate school.

Dominic J. Donnellan

Hometown: Bay Village, OH

Last Update: Dominic earned his B.S. in Chemistry from B-W in 1999. He received a job as a chemist for Bonne Bell after his graduation.

Sara E. Gombash

Hometown : Perrysburg, Oh

Other interests or hobbies : Competitive swimming

Plans after graduation: I am currently a student in the Neuroscience Ph.D. program at the University of Cincinnati (Cincinnati, OH). I am most interested in studying neurodegenerative disorders. For the future, I am interested in working in both neuroscience academia as well as industrial research.

How the lab has helped you in obtaining your long term goals: The lab has changed the way I think about science and our world in general. I have always been interested in research, and for me, the lab confirmed my feelings. I gained knowledge about multiple techniques and procedures, which I am continuing to use in my graduate school research. My lab experience taught me about research I loved as well as research that I hated. Not only did I gain factual knowledge in the lab, but I had an amazing group of supportive friends. In the lab I worked with other students not majoring in neuroscience, or some interested in medical school, graduate school, or both. The lab is a wonderful experience for anyone in science and interested in research.
